Hey Everyone,
I have a question for you, I brought my 2 dogs for OFA x-rays at the begining of August. They vet sent them through email to the OFA. I recieved my OFA papers for one of my dogs, but I am still waiting for the results for my other dog. ( The dog I didnt recieve the results for this time, came back the 1st time with mild HD on the left hip.) I posted the x-ray on the message board, and no one seems to think there would be anything wrong with them, and I also sent them to other dog people, and they too say they are perfect.
Has anyone expercienced this before or have any input on why it would take so long? I haven't called the OFA yet.

Jennifer -
Can you repost the xray? I am not saying OFA is perfect but please remember, to my knowledge we don't have any board certified orthopedic vets on this board (I could be wrong) so when you ask for opinions, it is everyone's best guess from all of our personal experiences.
I would love to see the xray though..........................

Resubmit. They should be OFA fair if they were done done at 24 months. The positioning is not correct as the legs are not parallel, being too close together which typicalls pulls the balls a bit outward from the sockets.
I suggest you consider giving daily does of glucosamine/chondroitin which can aid joint health over time. This compund tends to prevent inflammation and arthritic changes as dogs mature and put on weight and muscle. HD is suspected of being an autoimmune genetically based disease and chondroitin is a good cox 2 inhibitor without all the side effects of NSAIDs. You can buy human grade pills at walmart, kmart, sams club or costco to get a pretty good price. You can give them in a little peanutbutter or crush them with a single hammer blow first and put in your dogs food. With proper nutrition and conditioning, and keeping this GSD lean and fit, you should never see the occurrence of disabling HD in this dog. I just don't see HD in the xray at this time. Sometimes better filters and backlighting will show arthritic changes not easily seen, but nothing appears to show that now.

Let me try this for a 3rd time! My posts for some reason wern't posting on the board.
Preston: When you talk about arthritic changes, where do they occur, and what do they look like?
Pia: I know the feeling when you expect one outcome, and get another, always a little disapointing even though the dogs still passed.

If you look at the area between the ball and the outside of the femur, you can see change in the bone (thickening). I agree with OFA with the possibility of bumping up to a Borderline.

I got my results back today FINALLY! He passed the OFA this time with a Fair grade, which I am happy about, because now, I can do a breed survey if I choose to do so!
