IBD is known as inflammatory bowel disease. Currently, I have two gsd who have been diagnosed with this disease via exploratory surgery and upper and lower GI scope. Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)and Irritable Bowel Sydrome are two different diseases. Please confirm with your friend what the dog's diagnosis is. Dogs with IBD also tend to have food allergies. So diet choice should be carefully selected and should be done with the advisement of her vet. Even if the vet recommends a prescription diet. A lot of dogs do well and become stable on the Rx diets. After a certain amount of time has passed, then the dog could be switched over to another diet. The most important thing with IBD is getting the dog stable.
There is a great Yahoo Group called IBDogs. Please have your friend join. The group is so full of information and support. I've learned alot from them.
Good luck!

It is my understanding that Irritable Bowel SYNDROME is stress related, whereas irritable Bowel DISEASE is chronic and on-going. If your friend's dog has the former, diet is only one aspect of a potential cure - the dog's temperament (anxious, hyperactive?) and lifestyle (enough exercise, mental stimulation, OB training, etc.) will also need to be evaluated. I feed raw, and am not a fan of most dry diets - but the addition of probiotics and digestive enzymes can help calm an irritated digestive tract.
