Please forgive me if this has already been discussed, but has the SV re-instated the longcoated dog where they can be shown? I understand they would have their own class? just curious as to if this is true.

This has been announced a long time ago, but does not take effect until January of 09 I think. The dogs will be shown in separate classes, coated vs normal as I now understand it. Stay tuned.

this will be interesting. I have seen quite a few coats with outstanding structure. some of the prettiest built /moving pups I have seen were coats. they were just placed as pets due to them not being able to be shown.

I have seen many long coats whose structure and pigment is outstanding. I have a young female, imported with siiblings who is coated. She is a Yasko granddaughter and a very beautiful female. I personally would not breed for coats, but some have and the gene pool is too small as it is with all the line breeding that goes on. I personally welcome the coats and now that there is a DNA marker that can identify what dogs carry the coated gene, people who want them can do this and those who don't won't. Except for the undercoating, I have seen enough GSDs in my life to know that there is, indeed, a huge continuum in coat length.

I also have a long coat female who is well constructed and we are hoping sometime in the future that we will be able to put her to a short coat in the hope of passing her genetics on to a fab short coat for us for the future.

I love long coats. I have long coat female from working lines and I love her. She is the best looking female, and gets complemented by other breeders on regular basis. I would never breed for that characteristic but every time I am looking for a pup and I find a long coat in a litter that I like I will always still her away. Sorry but I am a sucker for long coats, plus they shed less!!!!!. I though it should be the other way around. LoL

snajper60 - I quite agree, they also dry much quicker than their short coated friends.

If i'm not mistaken, it was only back in 1999 that the SV removed Longcoats from the breed registry, prior they were considered kkl2 (a fault).
When you consider that numerous long coats are produced each year simply because both parents carry the recessive gene, it stands to reason that many will be from champion bloodlines (working and show).
Given the above, Structuarally and in every respect other than coat, there is no reason why they should not be as capable/good as any short coat.

My LC female is a Beauty Queen, chicken, but a good looking one! Your are right about the shedding, very little.

I am a little bit confused. Will long coats be eligible for show in the future and if so will they have there own class.
