THE KISS

he had just saved her from a fire in her house, rescuing her by carrying her out of the house into her front yard, while he continued to fight the fire.

When he finally got done putting the fire out, he sat down to catch his breath and rest.

A photographer from the Charlotte , North Carolina newspaper, noticed her in the distance looking at the fireman.

He saw her walking straight toward the fireman and wondered what she was going to do.

As he raised his camera, she came up to the tired man who had saved her life and the lives of her babies and kissed him just as the photographer snapped this photograph.

Scroll down for photograph.

Picture is real.  The story is a little inaccurate.

At least the firefighter was honest about the story.  Nice to see a working class (AKA "dangerous" breed anymore) with such a good disposition that she can differentiate between friend and foe in a stressful situation.  Doesn't get much more stressful than that unless there's injuries involved.

I still have a real fondness for the dobies.

Well, he was there to help even if he did not actually carry her out of the house.  Perhaps she understood that.  I like to think she did.  Veronica

I guess I worded that wrong.  I should have been more clear.  I believe she understood, too.

Firefighter Jeff Clark:

…That house was full of smoke and we couldn’t see it very well.  All I saw was a dog run out, and one was (already) in the backyard.  I think Cinnamon got out the door herself.

The dog approached me.  As soon as I knelt down and took my mask off, Patrick was coming around the corner of the house and took the picture.

In a house full of smoke I can only imagine what the dog was suffering.  She’d have been grateful to anyone who opened the door she knew was a way out I do believe.

I'd bet she “greeted” other firefighters in the same way.  Maybe by scent in passing although it’s hard to imagine how.

Maybe she was just glad to see someone who knelt down to her level?  I'd even wager a guess that it was a combination of the kneeling down and the knowledge that that "stuff" doesn't belong on a human face.  Who's to say what she smelled in those ashes?

Doesn’t matter really.  It does go to show the great temperament and her ability to discern between friend and foe and it's a great picture.  Timing on the part of the photographer couldn't have been better even if the story wasn't entirely accurate.

What a beautiful story! I love Dobes too!

Once I noticed my neighbors detached garage was one fire, I yelled to my husband call 911 and ran over.  When I got there he was trying to empty the garage of cars etc. and his two german shep. who lets just say where a handfull kept following him into the building and getting in his way.  I asked him if I could help him and he said grab the dogs and put them in the house.  Great. they kinda knew me but not really!  These are two dogs that once would not let my husband out of the car in our own driveway, they had walked over w/their owner.  Even though they both dug in their heels and I had to be rather forceful they let me!  I think they knew I was trying to help.  When the fire dept got there they had us put the dogs in my car they were afraid the fire would spread to the house.  They were both pretty stressed  as we sat in my car but they never gave me any trouble and from that day on they treated my different than other people.  Dogs can be so amazing!
