I received this today on one of my dog lists, and it is so sad!
Last year I was talking with Bill Forbes of Ruff LIfe and he was telling me that he had a friend with a dobbie who had a larger size ball with the same type of issue, however the dog had the ball while she was at work, she came home and the dog had bled to death trying to get the ball off of his tongue.
Something that I always look for when letting my dogs have a toy to play with. You will find squeaky balls have this issue if the piece that makes the noise comes out of the ball. Another reason not to have these annoying toys!

Another reason to be careful what types of toys you give your dogs.

Sad and I do use this same ball! My question is though, why would you leave a dog unattended with this type of toy anyway? I guess anything can happen though. I have a string on my ball for 2 reasons, 1.) if they partially swallow it you have a handle to pull it out and 2.) I have a handle on the ball for training and that provides a better target of the ball, and my dogs only get to play with this ball durring training, otherwise, it is MY ball!

Kari,
I made the mistake one day of buying a cheap toy from dog display at wally world. It didn't advertise the fact that it had a noise maker in it. It looked sturdy but the dog's had it tore open within minute's and the device came out. Small and metal it would have easily lodged in a dog's intestine's. Made in China. Buyer beware they do the same thing with toy's for children.
My dog's favorite toy is a deflated (torn) basket ball. The wore out kind I get for free. Actually we find ton's of them on the river bank every spring amoung all the rest of the trash that's floating down the river every year.
You alway's have to wonder what's in a stuffed toy. Lucky I was there watching my dog's when they tore open that cheap little tug.
Brent.

This type of accident can happen with you standing in front of your dog, I let my dogs chew on toys all of the time in the lliving room while I am on the computer or watching TV, one suction of the tongue and what are you going to do if you can't get it off? If it's late on a Saturday night and the ER Vet is half an hour away??
So it's just a matter of being aware that there are these types of dangers in balls that only have one whole in them and squeaker balls seem to be just that.
I am sure the lady with the dobbie felt like she left her dog with a big ball that couldn't be swallowed and set off about her day. This type of accident is not something that most people think can happen.

I think that the lesson here is to make SURE there is a hole on EACH end, so that a vacuum cannot be created. Fortunately, Kongs have the smaller hole onthe other end, or we would have heard of this type of injury way before now.
I am so sorry for Chai, though. Kari, is this a friend of yours. A $5k hit is nothing for most of us to sneeze at.

That's horribly sad. The smallest thing I leave my dogs with is a kong an I am even rethinking that. Last week I had my female get it lodged in her jaw so she couldn't spit it out, I had to open her mouth a bit more myself (no doubt that hurt) but saw the paniced look in her eye when she brought it back and tried to drop it and it didn't come out. Luckily I was playing fetch with her and was right there to help. I like the really big toys for leaving in kennels. The Joly balls stay intact well enough except the rope can be chewed off by aggressive chewers. I just throw that away when my pup did so. The ball is now harmless, nothing inside and no pieces to fall out, waaaay too big to choke on. I don't buy the kind with handles as I suspect my dogs would chew those off as well.

I thought that was the sole purpose of the water bowl. You fill it, leave and while you're gone they have hours of fun.

Try water trough Don, a bowl they have fun with all right. Empty and upside down, it makes for hours of fun on the concrete to my neighbors annoyment, not t mention my own. God thats a terrible noise.
