When my dog gets up from sleeping, he shakes his head a couple times- almost like he's got something in his ears.
Also, after a short run ... one or the other ear will go askew - sideways like an airplane wing. It always self corrects within a minute. It usually only happens once during the day...and only one ear at a time. His earset is normal after it corrects.
He just had a general yearly exam, ears were fine.
This happens daily. He is not in distress, although he looks odd when his ear is cockeyed. He doesn't mind me rubbing it.
Do you think he has aliens that live in his ear canal that get annoyed when he wakes up or exercises? But seriously, have any of you experienced the airplane ear with your GSD? Thanks...

Although it's not a daily occurence, I have seen my boy shaking his head and pawing at one ear first thing in the morning. I think he was just laying on it in a weird position in his crate all night. He was fine after a few minutes.

Maybe a deep infection? I know you mentioned the vet checked, maybe he needs to examine him a little closer?

Is it always the same ear? If it is always the same ear, then get out a flashlight, hold the dog (or have someone else hold him) and look deep into his ear. If you see anything other than normal looking ear folds, have your vet check it out. Sometimes dogs get an infection deep inside their ear and it isn't obvious from a quick look. Sometimes if the dog runs through brush or tall grass or weeds, he can get a seed or bit of vegetation deep in his ear. Sometimes you can get it out with an ear wash. Use special ear cleaning fluid (otic cleaner) if you have it. If you don't water works too. Pour a little (an eyedropper full) into the ear, fold the dog's ear over and massage the ear a little. Then let the dog shake his head to get the liquid out. Jump back quickly if you don't want the stuff all over you.
I once had a GSD who somehow managed to fold her ear back when she slept. I don't know if her ears went to sleep or what, but she always shook them when she woke up. Never did find anything in this dog's ear.

He actually used the ear scope thingy to check deep...but didn't mention anything. At the time I didn't think about informing him about the crooked ear thing - but I'm with you in thinking he does need to check it a little more thoroughly. It isn't always the same ear. Very strange indeed...

Mine does that too from time to time and I think it is cute and funny!

Clip some of the hair inside the ear and see if it makes a difference. Make sure you hold onto that loose hair and remove it.

Having had a grooming parlour & seen umpteen ear infections that have gone undetected even by vets I would suggest simply putting ear drops into BOTH ears for 10days.
Often people stop the drops too soon when there is stilll atiny amount of infection DEEP in the ear. This practice I have found successfull in ALL cases
Good luck
