What is the maximam age a dog could be used as a stud? And what can I do to keep him in top condition for this job?

Thanks,

Normally 8-10 years, and only fertile then if they are bred/collected regularly.

V Alfred Kuhlen Norden sired a large litter of live pups at age 12.

i asked the same question, long as his semen is active. best if you get it checked every 6 months, even at 10 they could sire a litter. also depends on the breed.

I know one well known GSD still producing at 11.

AKC will accept up to 12 years without a semen check from the Vet.

I'm curious as well since I have a very good male, just never bred because my female ended up having to be spayed due to hip issue (not dyspasia) found during OFAs which I did prior to breeding.  The other female ended up being infertile after 2 litters so that breeding never took (all screened, vaccinated for appropriate pre-breeding health), my male's would have been her 3rd, and she never took with another male who has bred successful litters either, and who was tried after mine was deemed a failure .  I was considering collecting and storing his semen with a vet in Ohio (Dr Hutchison) and wondered at almost 8 years old if it was worth the drive and expense?  His father produced successfully up to 12 years and grandfather close to that, but they were bred regularly.  Does his lack of matings have anything to do with semen potency?  I've heard different thoughts on that from give him "happy endings"   every 6 months or so to don't worry about it.

I can imagine the comments now on the last couple lines LOL

I thought AKC drew the line at 10,  It depend's on the dog.

Is he worth breeding that long or that much?

If he's been breeding has he been producing well and with quality offspring?

Freezing semen and inseminating is very expensive and require's a lot, it's a lot to go through.

I would'nt pay for insemination from frozen semen without all the DNA  information verified and that's expensive.

Would all that be worth it?

I've seen some very old dog's produce but it's not the norm.

Lord know's every old dog deserve's a little just for sticking around that long..LOL

I hope I can keep on keeping on a while longer..:)

Sorry, getting off topic.

I'll stick with 10 years old for a dog.

Asko v d Lutter would have turned 14 in August of this year and he was still producing this year.  Of course, he was an exception, not your average dog!
