OK two questions.....First what carpet "solution" have you guys used to get rid of urine smells and odors?  What do you think works the best?

Second...ever since my Dante passed away my now Alpha male is marking in the house.  Problem is my carpet is such a color I can't see where he is marking til it gets rank and I walk around feeling the carpet for any evidence.   I am not sure what to do about this marking other than confine him.  He is nine years old and I would rather find another way of curbing this problem.  When Dante was alilve none of this ever happened.  Once the ranking changed on came the marking.

What kind of machine are you using?  Depending on what you use I might have a suggestion and I'd bet my (backside) that you already have them in the house.  Not a product you have to purchase special for "the machine"..

Carpet and dogs, especially GSDs, don't mix.  Carpet holds so much dirt, hair and germs in it.   I know money doesn't grow on trees, but I like/have Mostly hardwood and tile ,that is not slippery, in the house.    If Mrs. Corleone would let me, I'd get rid of it in the bedrooms, but everywhere else is carpet free.  Way easier to maintain the hair, germs and clean.

I agree the best thing to do, especially since your carpet is already soiled and smelly - is to get rid of the carpet.  Hardwood floors, or tile, with throw-rugs (cheap ones that can be tossed or washed) are best.  If that's not possible, then use "urine odor removal" products, and get the carpet professionally cleaned - then either crate your dog while not supervised, or there are "diapers" that you could put on him while in the house - easier to wash the "diaper" than find and wash the carpet.  The "diaper" I'm talking about is a belly-band for males - just a  wide strip of absorbant material that goes around the waist and if/when he pees, it would be in the material and not on the carpet.  Get a few of them so you can have some in the wash and still have one to use on him.  If you are handy you could probably make one, get one and then make others.

Good luck!

I used to have a BIssel (the most expensive one) but it bit the dust so I was going to go rent the Rug Doctor.   I tried using a black light but I don't think it was strong enough to light anything up.  I keep removing things I think he is marking on like a crate the first time.  He'll have to be banned outside during the day if he doesn't quit but I hate doing that to him (yes I'm a sucker, he's my baby).  But if need be I will.
