I just read this story in Colorado today; a German Shepherd's owner committed suicide 6 weeks ago and the family had reported him "missing" having no knowledge of the man's whereabouts or the dogs. Officers located the missing man who had apparently committed suicide. His GSD had been found at his side alive but very frail and thin. The paper said the dog apparently never left the owners side for 6 weeks and only survived by eating mice and rabbits.
It just gave me goose bumps when I read the story. Very sad but touching.

Wild story!
What are you doing in Colorado?
How were rabbits in the home? I take it he committed suicide outdoors?

I am not sure but I would guess the dog had nowhere to go and didn't know the way home. Loyal yes, the man should have not been so selfish. I didn't read a motive for the suicide.
The dog is back home now.
Good dog,gooddog.

I read the article but can' tfind the link to it now. The owner drove out into the desert and shot himself, the truck nor body could be seen from the air (they searched for his truck in hopes of finding him) - family knew he was suicidal. Apparently the dog was roaming around, probably hunting for critters to eat, and a rancher saw the dog and followed him, found the body and called the authorities. The dog was returned to the owners' wife and kids, who "missed him and were glad to have him back". Very sad but touching story - what a good dog. Of course one would hope that our loyal and bonded friends (our GSDs) would hang around in any circumstances - after all the owner and his truck were there, nothing else was familier and the dog didn't know where he was to leave to go anywhere. Still, a good dog with his owner to the end.

Don- I guess I didn't clarify enough; I wasn't in Colorado- although I'd love to be anywhere but here right now lol, I just read it in an article and found it touching. Molly was correct the man did not die in his house.
When I hear stories like these it just proves more to me that this is the only breed that should exist.
