Hello Everyone!
I have a couple of quick questions about feeding pups (4-8 weeks). I do not have a litter, but a friend of mine is planning on having one next year (if hips and elbows, along with titles work out as plan) and we were taking about our adult dog food, which made me wonder about puppy food. My vet once told me that feeding adult dog food really depends on the dog and that usually one can start eating it at around 12-18 months old, in his opinion. I have a female unaltered almost three year old, so trying to think back to when she was eight weeks is hard to do. I know her breeders had her on Iams, but I have heard not to feed Iams and changed to food to something else. She is on Taste of the Wild (and sometimes Health Food for Dogs) right now, and we both love it. So in everyones opinions what is the best puppy food around? What you would all recommend?
Which kind of leads me to the next question. How much does an average breeder pay for dog/puppy food for a litter of healthy pups?
Thanks ahead of time,
RockyMud

Personally, I don't feed puppy food at all.
I start my pups on adult dog food, soaked and blended at three weeks of age. Sometimes I will add some baby food and baby cereal to it.
I do not send puppy food home with owners either.
BTW, I had to feed Largo, my Rottie, a grain free from puppyhood. I deliberately kept her "hungry" so that she wouldn't grow to fast. Nice thing about TOTW, is that is lower in protien than some other grain frees out there.

I have had excellent results with my litters feeding
Eukanuba Medium Breed Puppy.
Over the years I have realized that Large breed puppy does not
have sufficient nutrition for growing pups..especially our big boned puppies.
My adults are eating
Eukanuba Naturally Wild.
I have fed almost every kind of dog food on the market.
IMO - Eukanuba works best for our Shepherd Dogs.
Royal Canin is excellent, but I cant get it fresh, so I stick
with Eukanuba.
I also feed a raw diet (puppies and adults) at least 3 times a week.
The dogs are doing fabulous, and I usually have nice sized litters.
So I cant complain.
Good luck with your friends breeding.

Well if you want the BEST diet a puppy can be on here it is. First off it isn't cheap. Start with Urban Wolf www.urbanwolf.cc This formula is second to none but very expensive you add raw or cooked meat my choice is raw for a puppy I use natural raw ground beef then add a fish oil. I take it a step further and add Canine Complete with joint mobility www.thewholisticpet.com so I'm double sure I'm not mssing anything in the pup's diet as a finisher I add Goats milk yogurt. This is basically a high end BARF diet with all the guess work taken out. Give this a couple of weeks you won't believe the results.

Sorry it took me so long to get back with everyone.
Thank you all. I sat down with my family last night and asked what we fed Sadie when she was that little. No one could remember. I know we have never done anything else besides dry dog food, while once in a while a can. What about raw feeding? If any of you fed raw or your own recipe, then what do you put inside it?
Thanks so much,
RockyMud
