1)  This is for Joseph's mother, whom I have met, and let me tell you, that woman is all that! and then some.

2)  Her yard is fenced, with, I believe a wall.

3)  She has owned Rotties in the past, and is perfectly capable of handling a dog who has manners and is respectful.

4)  She doesn't want a "lap" dog or a small dog.  She likes big dogs.

Now, in regards to everyone who "slammed"(For lack of a better word) Joseph.

Gang, this was no way to "educate" someone.  Let's face it....if someone "screamed" at me that I was a liar and stupid, I would tune them out and do whatever I wanted anyway....

However, if someone came to me, with reasonable, intelligent concerns, such as:

A)  Joseph, your mother is up there in years.  What are your concerns about a "rowdy" dog who might inadvertantly injure her?

B)  What will happen to said dog, if, dogs forbid, your mother passes away or becomes unable to care for the dog?

C) Have you looked into other resources, IE, alarm systems, weapons training, etc?  Will you be doing this in conjunction with getting a dog?

D)  Does your mother have a good support system that she can rely upon should she need the help?

E)  Have you considered "life alert"?

Now, as to Preston....Preston, I have gone back and read some of your posts...quite frankly, you can be an asshole----but that is ok, we can all be that way sometimes....but to outright accuse someone of being a "troll" when I do not believe you bothered to research him....well, that is just wrong, in my opinion(I would call it humble, but I am not a humble person), and personally, I think you do owe Joseph an apology.  And a man would realize that and be willing to step up to the plate.

Joseph offered up his website, with contact information on it.  He was vouched for by Andrew Masia, who is highly respected in the GSD world, and he has a dog who has been titled and shown(A GSD).

I believe that if you want people to learn, then browbeating them is not the way to do it.  I spend most of my waking hours educating people on assistance dogs, why they should/shouldn't breed their dogs, why they should train their dogs, foods, etc....I find that getting angry doesn't do any good in the education process.

Don't get me wrong----I get frustrated.  I call my intelligent dog friends and other trainers and vent....but I seldom get nasty with the clients.

As to warring with those you(the board) calls "trolls".  You are much better off ignoring the behavior and not responding.  As with some dogs, negative attention is better than no attention at all.  Ignoring bad behavior and only rewarding(IE, responding) good behavior is the best course of action.

Funny you should post these since all these concerns were suggestions posted by several people.

B)  What will happen to said dog, if, dogs forbid, your mother passes away or becomes unable to care for the dog?

Hodie,

Yes, they were....but they were posted in a very "condesending" way.  Downright nasty by some.

I do understand your concerns about a large dog for an elderly person....let's hope that we don't meet with the same "inquiries" when we are old and infirmed(heck, I am infirmed now, and somedays feel old as dirt).

When I read the posts, my first thought was "Wow, bitchy responses."  Very few of the responses were kind, and gentle.  No one took into account that this man feared for his mother's safety and well-being.

No one took the time to acknowledge his fears and anxieties.

And, many, were down right nasty....

Ya, I think he's worried too. I suggest a dog and a few guns. Gun Clubs are fun and dog friendly, huge bon fires, good food, she sounds active enough to do these things. Hope she gets at least a dog.

I didn't read Hodies' posts as condescending at all.  I thought they were very respectful, unlike my first one in the thread, which was largely a reaction to oprahman/shortstuff/bobby.  I do agree with BabyEagle4u's ideas.  All seniors who are physcally able with okay vision should be armed and home and carry pepper spray when out.  And I see no reason why an appropriate GSD cannot be selected for a guardian/companion if the situation is right (and it seems to be so).  I think it is a good idea to have a cell phone close by at all times.  My first post was a statement of disbelief in the use of the concept "home invasion", perhaps based on differing definitions of such.  I never said I couldn't be wrong in my assumption.  I just assumed the negative without a police report.  I will check with some friends in Fla and see what they can find out if there are mandatory filing rules for filing police reports when a call is made and an officer is dispatched.  If shown to be wrong on this I have no problem apologizing to Joseph at all, as I do make mistakes and may have made the wrong judgement here. Unfortunately Joseph has apparently already stated he will never return to this site anyhow.  Sad thing is, however, Joseph has already stated he is gone for good anyhow.  And he probably objected to the chaos and agitation on the various topic threads he has read which ahve been getting quite contentious too often lately.  This site is run a certain way and is not appropriate for everyone.  It is certainly not rigidly managed and that is just the way it is.

Prestongirl, just apoligize to the guy already and get over it. Take your medicine like a man! The longer you continue to draw this out, the longer you expose yourself to looking like a fool. Suck it up, you shot your big mouth off and were called out on it. You've already been proven wrong. Apologize to Joseph and I promise to leave you alone.

PS. Who the heck is bobby??? Your REALLY starting to worry me....no joke!

I'll bet Joseph is one sorry dude that he ever brought his question to this board. The horse has died.

Preston,

No, reports are not always required to be filed.  I have had a few incidents with the thought that someone had been in my home, called the cops(didn't enter the house, allowed them to enter), and no reports were filed.

There have been other times when I have asked to have a report filed(for future reference sake).

When I have an access issue with a service dog, I don't always ask for a report to be filed.  However, If I do not believe that the problem is solved by the officer's presense, then, yes, I do ask for a report.  That way I can follow up legally if need be.
