How did you guys do it? - Page 1

How did you start up your kennel? And what is the best way to start it? Can you start with one good female and build from there or do you have to have to start with alot of dogs?  I was thinking start with one great female paying stud fees and going from there until I can expand to other dogs, but I would like to learn from your guys experience.

Also do you register your kennel name with the AKC? What else is involved?

It takes a hell of a lot more than that.

First thing they do is post an e-mail address so everyone can communicate with them.

Exhibit honesty and intelligence.   Then they learn it from the ground up over years and years.

Hard work, experience , and a lot of money.

Oh, I forgot actual ability.  Raise your own, train your own, work your own, and compete, win, and become known.

I've probably left out ten million things.

But I'm only guessing

If you want a kennel you can buy everything you need, all it takes is money.

It's an expensive hobby, Don't plan on making any money unless you become the best.

Even then it's if-e.

MENTOR...... you need to find/get one. Actually see what is all involved because what you think - is NOT what really happens. Season vets make it LOOK easy! It is not and they will even tell you that. Get involved with a club or expereince trainer to learn how to work your own dog. Personally I find it very lazy  for a novice to "buy" pretitled dogs and breed them while calling themself a Kennel! There was no learning, no heart ache, no expereinces, no knowledge involved just $$$$.

 I don't think anyone can sit and spell it all out for you. It comes with experiences and learning lessons. Buying the dogs, the kennels, and equipement is the easy part. The rest is priceless and no amount of money can be put on it.

ALSO please note what is going on with high prices right now. Look around........... how many kennels do you see with older puppies looking to move them? How many do not have half their litter sold by 8 weeks? How many are looking to place older dogs? Times are tight and many breeders are cutting back. Kennels/breeders that are moving their dogs have been est. for years and have the clients. They have been though the good , the bad, and the ugly.

I am not bashing you or tring to be mean. But I am being honest. Before jumping in to this HOBBY you need to do your homework. If you have spent anytime on this board you will know or will find out it is a Doggie dog world SPECIALLY in the GSD world.

Do you homework after you read, read and reread you can come back here and start asking questions. Breeding should be taken very seriously and usually it will cost you more than you actually make. Last think I am sure you would want is to breed crap so learn. Get a dog, train him/her, title him/her, and I guarantee it you will learn a lot while doing it and than in few years you my consider it.

You can be GSD lover all you want but you NEED to know what you are doing 100%

One) it takes a VERY good female and a female that has pr oven herself to be worthy of breeding. A female that has titles of any kind is a huge plus and a must IMO.

2) DO you know what it takes for a pup to be , Schutzhund prospect,show quality,pet quality(for someone who wants just a pet)  etc...

3) do you recognize "drives" in a pup or dog?????

4) Are you willing to dedicate yourself for a life time to the pups you reproduce, are you willing to take them back????

What I want to know is WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO BE A KNOWLEDGEABLE BREEDER???

Most small breeders that I see in the papers and even the ones on websites, if you ask them what have THEY done to educate themselves about the breed they SOO love and want to reproduce each year, what  seminars (of any kind about GSD) what trials, shows, have they attended, what type of training have they put on their dogs....99.9% of the  time they have no flippin answers!!

I say to you learn as much as you can about the breed , in every aspect possible, have something under your belt that says you have done your homework and you are a big support for the breed. I see a lot of bad shepherds that come to our Club from breeders who thought all they needed to so is buy kennels and put a dog in it, don't be one of those, be a proud breeder that took her time and effort for what she loves.

Step 1.  look in the found ads for a german shepherd.  Remember they cannot be fixed.  Pick the dog up and breed the hell out of it.  If you charge $800 a pup, you can make enough to buy a nice female.

Step 2.  With the money made on the rescue, go out and buy an 8 yr old titled female.  Breed her back to back three times in a row. 

Step 3.  With the $ made in those three litters, you should have enough to buy 3 8 yr old females with titles.  Breed these females back to back for at least f our years.

Step 4.  Take the money and invest it into 10 females that are 6 yrs old.  After breeding them back to back for the next 5 years, you should be well on your way to winning the Dog World breeder of the year.

Very sorry I asked. I didnt want to be bashed. I do want to help in my own way improve the breed. If I didnt I wouldnt be worried about your answers. Thank to those who helped. I dont know why you all assume I am this bad person that wants to breed and make money. I too love the breed. Maybe I am not lucky enough to have the experience you guys have. But everyone started somewhere huh?

Read, learn, train. Than Finlay one day you might consider breading. Don't do it the other way around. Most breeders start with female dog, stud fee is around 1K.

i bought Don Corleone's book of breeding. if you stay up late you might catch the info-mercial about it. Usually starts around 3 am on FOX.
