What do you think of these hips. What rating would you give them?

by Blitzen on 07 August 2008 - 16:08

How old? Anesthesized or tranquilized?

by mouland on 07 August 2008 - 19:08

The dog is 22 months old and she was complexly tranquilized, she was giving another drug  to bring her out of it once the x-rays were taken She 2 months from her last heat.   Anyone want to comment on what rating she would get?

Would it be possible for those who are rating - to tell a little bit why you come up with that rating?  I am trying to learn how to read xrays (but still have trouble).  Is it the ball is not set in the socket enough, changes, etc.

Just would like to figure out how to read these things.

Thank you,

Cheryl

There are  a few significant changes to the femorals heads of the femurs. The right hand view side is worse. They are not round and smooth.

I believe they will pass, the hips are seated well in the sockets, and the sockets are deep enough.   Hard to tell how smooth the fem heads are with the fuzziness of the x-ray (or the copy probably).  But I agree they should be rounder to be ideal or "good".  I don't think this dog will have trouble with his hips though, he should remain sound for working no problem.  The positioning is excellent - a good example really, if the positioning on this dog were not exactly straight and knees turned inward as they are, I'd bet they would not pass OFA.  Positioning makes a big difference on hips like these.

Who was the vet that took the x-rays, location?  I'm once again in search of a vet who can take straight x-rays.

how can you tell if the knees are turned inward? I recently had a dog OFA'd and the vet who took the xrays said borderline/mild for my dogs hips,. i am not sure why, they xrays look alright to me.

How do you see arthritic changes in an xray?

Molly:  I have had good sucess with this vet in Malvern, but in comparison with what others pay on this board  for xrays- the price is high.
