I found this tonight on the Shiloh Shepherd forum, and just had to share, to encourage those who are breeders: God bless you!
Breeder's Poem
I love my little puppy; she makes my house a home.
She is my very sweetest little friend; I never feel alone.
She makes me smile; She makes me laugh; She fills my heart with love . . .
Did some person breed her, or did she fall from above?
I've never been a breeder, never seen life through their eyes;
I hold my little puppy and just sit and criticize.
I've never known their anguish; I've never felt their pain,
the caring of their charges, through snow or wind or rain.
I've never waited the whole night through for babies to be born,
The stress and trepidation when they're still not there by morn.
The weight of responsibility for this body in my hands,
This darling little baby, who weighs but 60 grams.
Should you do that instead of this . . . or maybe that was wrong?
Alone you fight and hope, one day, he'll grow up proud and strong.
You pray he'll live to bring great joy to someone else's home.
You know it's all just up to you; you'll fight this fight alone.
Formula, bottles, heating pads, you've got to get this right,
two-hour feedings for this tiny guy, throughout the day and night.
Within your heart you dread that you will surely lose this fight,
To save this little baby, but God willing . . . you just MIGHT.
Day one; he's in there fighting; you say a silent prayer.
Day two & three, he's doing well, with lots of love and care.
Day four & five . . . he's still alive; your hopes soar to the heavens.
Day six he slips away again, dies in your hands, day seven.
You take this little angel, and bury him alone.
With aching heart and burning tears, and an exhausted groan,
You ask yourself, "Why do this? . . . Why suffer through this pain?"
Yet watch the joy your puppies bring, and everything's explained.
So, when you think of breeders and label them with "Greed,"
Think of all that they endure to fill another's need.
For when you buy your puppy, with your precious dollars part,
You only pay with money . . . while they pay with all their heart.

I love my little puppy; but she makes the house a wreck.
Arnery little cuss, til I get 'er by the neck.
She makes me laugh, she makes me cry, she fills the toilet with her kongs . . .
She transplants the flowers, fills the night sky with her songs.
Why the heck am I a breeder? I oughtta know by now;
If they want a Shiloh shepherd, I'll have to cross mine with a cow.

DARYL: OR A HORSE...I LOVE IT..
NO GREATER JOY OF BIRTHING PUPS AND WATCHING A 16 OZ PUP BECOME IN TWO DAYS 2 LBS , THREE DAYS 3 LBS AND AS THEY GET TO THE THREE WEEK AGE,, YOUR WHOLE WORLD CHANGES...YOU ARE LOOKED AT ,STRAIGHT IN YOUR EYES BY THEM : ALL 6 OR 8 OF THEM ...STRAIGHT IN YOUR EYES....AND SAY TO THEIR HUMAN MOMMY.....WE LOVE YOU MOM....BUT WHERE THE HECK IS OUR FOOD.....
SUNSILVER: THANKS SO MUCH ...I CRIED WHEN I GOT TO THE END...I HAVE LOST ONLY ONE OR TWO OVER THE YEARS..AND MY BIGGEST HURT WAS ONE THAT WAS ALREADY TWO WEEKS OLD AND A HUGE FAT NICE MALE..AND ROSIE WAS , OF COURSE , STILL A GOOD SIZE HEALTHY FEMALE WHO NEVER LOST A POUND AFTER BIRTHING,,,BECAUSE THEY EAT LIKE HORSES AND SHE IS PIC OF HEALTH,,,ROLLED OVER ON THIS PUP AT NIGHT , AND NEVER KNEW IT AND SQUASHED THE PUP...IT WAS UNDER HER SIDE .
NOTHING WRONG WITH THE PUP...MOMMA ROSIE IS A BIG BITCH AND SHE SLEEPS SOUNDLY...I WAS SO SHOCKED I WENT TO PIECES..MY KIDS HAD TO COME BURY HIM AS I COULDNT DO IT...
NEVER LOST A PUP THAT SIZE..i HAVE HAD A PUP BORN DEAD ONCE AND ONE WHO WAS TOO LONG IN BIRTH CANAL, AND I JUST WRAPPED IN PAPER AND BROWN BAGGED IT AND DISPOSED OF IT IN THE PIT FOR THE KENNEL. DIDNT GET TO ME . I SPEND HOURS IN THE BIRTHING BOX , TALKING, HOLDING, CLEANING AND IMPRINTING PUPPIES..NO GREATER JOY ..THAT LOOK AND THAT PUPPY BREATHE IS ONE OF A KIND. THE LOOK ON A FACE OF A PUPPY WHEN HE BEGINS TO LEARN WHO AND WHERE HE IS , IS ONLY KNOWN BY HIS BREEDER. i AM NOT ONLY THE BREEDER, I AM MY PUPPIES GANNY...AND THEY KNOW IT , TOO.

From reading these boards, I get the impression that GSD breeders rarely lose pups, while the lady I k now who breeds Cardis seems to lose at least one with every litter. Is this generally the case with small(er) dogs, or is it due to some other factor, like maybe inbreeding too much? (Corgis weigh about 40 lbs. at maturity: they're a medium-sized dog with dwarf short legs.)
