I am obviously new to the GSD breed and have been reading and learning alot the last few months, but I have a question concerning nerves and temperament. As everyone has probably noticed almost every add or website selling GSDs advertises good nerves and temperament as these are highly sought after qualities, which leads me to my questions. Do other breed have so many problems with bad nerves and temperament? Is it so hard to find these qualities in GSD because they are so poorly overbred due to popularity and greed? And last but not least, are these qualities desired in "extreme" due to the type of sport/training that any use GSDs for? Any opinions are appreciated.
Thanks

The reason you see this is exactly because we have a huge issue with nerves in the GSD world. For too many years people bred for looks including color and conformation that the working abilities, nerves and temperment were not a primary focus. People have realized this now and we are seeing some efforts to improve. But just because the ad says the dogs have good nerves etc does not mean that they do, some may be misleading but you can see a big varience between different on what constitutes good nerves. You can pull up alot of posts on this board where even at primary shows many of the GSD's are sub-par. Good news is that I think it is getting better.

Travel time,
I dont think other breed's if that's what you meant, mal's, rott's, dob's, or GSD's are that much different in good over bad qualities. It depend's on the same criteria, breeding, bloodline's, and environment, how they are raised.
Second, it's not hard to find these qualities at all in GSD's. But, there are different GSD's. Different qualities depending on the breeder's goal's. Show, sport, shutzhund, family pet's to working k-9's. The breed has many face's.
Yes these qualities are desired more for the purpose of work or sport.
Also you mentioned poorly bred animals for whatever reason yes they are out there too.
All thing's considered I'd still rather have a GSD.
Brent.
