I posted about a month ago about the bag of Diamond Naturals that my dog refused to eat and I suspected killed one of our rats and made 2 others go blind. As soon as I made the connection I took the dogs and the rats off the food. My dog is OK at the moment but the rats are still going down hill and I am putting them down tonight. Aside from the blindness, 2 have scabs allover and are losing lots of hair, 2 have formed tumor like lumps, all 3 females have lost allot of weight and one is very sluggish and breathing rapidly. I'm going to post pics and descriptions of each rat. Very sad that all of them were in perfect health 2 months ago.
Rascal, our male. One blind eye and a mass on his right cheek.
This is Princess, she is blind in both eyes and you can see her coat is balding and she has scabs all over. Non of them have ever had mites, if one had them, they all would. Only 2 have the scabs out of 4.
This is Blaze, not much to see but she is very skinny comapired to what she used to be and she is sluggish with respritory issues now. Just the past week she has not moved around much and is breathing heavily. Blaze and Rascals son died shortly after I opened the last bag of Diamond that my dog refussed to eat.
This is Cresent, you can see her hair is also falling out and she has a mass under her arm now.
The masses just showed up late last week. The blindness took place about a month ago and the hair loss also a month ago. Thankfully my dog only lost weight and her coat looked like shit. I'm hoping we don't see a progression of problems in her later down the road.

If you have ruled out the water, bedding, etc. and feel it is truly the food - you should maybe have some of the food sent out for analysis. Hopefully you haven't thrown it out yet.
I'm sorry about your Rats... Good Luck....

I just wanted to warn others and hope everyone is aware of changes that take place with what they feed. If your dogs coat looks like crap, just imagine what his insides are looking like and other things happening that you can't see right off. I wanted to give Diamond a second chance, after all the recalls but something still made me not feed it to my new dogs. Thank God!
I still have the open bag of food and would like suggestions on where I can send samples for testing?

I dont know if this will help but i know they did testing for melamine-when they had recall , when cats & ogs where getting sick..maybe you could call and ask them. Pet food specimens should be sent in their original packaging. Include your name, address and telephone number and the manufacturer, brand, production code and lot number of the product.
Unopened containers of wet or dry food can be shipped directly to the laboratory. Contents of opened containers of wet food should be frozen and shipped to arrive frozen at the Veterinary Diagnostic Center. Send as much of the wet or dry specimen as possible.
If using UPS or FedEx, send to UNL Veterinary Diagnostic Center, Fair Street and East Campus Loop, Lincoln, NE 68583-0907, Lincoln, NE 68583-0907. If using the U.S. Postal Service, mail to UNL Veterinary Diagnostic Center, P.O. Box 830907, Lincoln, NE 68583-0907.

4Pack,
There used to be a good pathology unit in Stanislaus, County at the fairgrounds in Turlock. They do reasonable necropsies on rodents.
You might want to send one to them to make sure to find out what you are dealing with here.
What are the ages of these rats?
Birdy...
