I have always fed Royal Canin and been pleased, but in the past year or so, they have raised their prices by more than $10 per bag, my distributor cost. The last raise, this past month, was almost $4 and $6 a bag for the Large Breed Puppy and the German Shepherd variety. My cost per bag now is over $40. As well, I am also noting dry and dull coats. It may be because of the weather, but if this continues, I won't be very happy. When I have written Royal Canin, all I get is a response that their costs for rice and chicken have gone up between 30 and 50%. I am certain that is mostly true, but I also believe they may be making some other more subtle changes in the formulations which are not being mentioned. Fact is however, all other foods I would consider are no better and certainly are equal to or greater in price.

I know its not on your list but i hav been feeding my dogs solid gold. I do not bathe them very often or do any sort of extra grooming because im not big on how they look but iwill say that there coat is so damn soft and shiny that people think i actually groom them all the time. My friends at my club think im lying when I say that i dont do any kind of grooming except the ocasional shed. Im realy happy with it.

I feed Orijen and RAW. I fed Fromm many years ago and it was good food, but so was Euk back then... I would recommend Orijen from your list, if you can afford it, it is spendy. I buy it online at www.doggiezbest.com , it is $59.97 per bag and as of late you have to get at least $75.00 from them to get free shipping. My dogs will eat this readily even though they get fresh meat daily. I also fed Canidae and know people who have and liked it, but they have changed their formular to more grains... Good luck, hope your dogs get OK on your next food.

My dogs are fed raw almost exclusively now, but I do occasionally still use kibble - I have had good results with Taste of the Wild, which I think is good value for the money. It is grain free, which is important to me - Canidae recently upped the grain content in its food which is probably why you are having problems.......

What you heard about Canidae is true, the company was bought out by Diamond and thus their formules have all changed. I feed it to but luckily have not had any problems yet. Innova and California Natural are good foods too.

Schutzhund girl 90,
Who told you that Canidae sold out to Diamoond? All that I have even heard about the Canidae/Diamond connection is that Canidae is having Diamond make "some" of their kibble, not that thay were "bought out."

I went to the Canadae website... these were the ingredients:
All Natural Ingredients
Chicken Meal, Turkey Meal, Brown Rice, White Rice, Lamb Meal, Chicken Fat (preserved with Mixed Tocopherols), Herring Meal, Flax Seed, Sun Cured Alfalfa Meal, Sunflower Oil, Chicken, Lecithin, Monocalcium Phosphate, Potassium Chloride, Choline Chloride, Linoleic Acid, Rosemary Extract, Sage Extract, Dried Enterococcus Faecium, Dried Lactobacillus Acidophilus Fermentation Product, Dried Aspergillus Oryzae Fermentation Extract, Dried Bacillus Subtilis Fermentation Extract, Inulin (from Chicory root), Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Fermentation Solubles, Yucca Schidigera Extract, Mixed Tocopherols (source of Vitamin E), Zinc Amino Acid Chelate, Manganese Amino Acid Chelate, Iron Amino Acid Chelate, Copper Amino Acid Chelate, Cobalt Amino Acid Chelate, Vitamin A Supplement, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Ascorbic Acid (source of Vitamin C), Niacin, Thiamine Mononitrate (Vitamin B1), Riboflavin (source of B2), Beta Carotene, Calcium Pantothenate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B6), Calcium Iodate, Folic Acid, D-Biotin, Sodium Selenite, Papaya, Vitamin B12 Supplement.
I have heard that when you have two grains listed as they do (following each other) , it actually changes the order a bit. Meaning you have two forms of rice, so technically, if you lumped the two together, wouldn't there be the chance that it could possibly be first or second ingredient as opposed to the Chix or Turkey meal? Anyone out there have any knowledge as to this claim?
I used to feed Canadae, and I used to mix a little of the canned with the dry. One day, I opened a can of the Chix, and reeled back from the horrible smell. I opened several cans, and they all had this tinny bad smell. I returned the cans, let the area rep know, contacted the company (not to make problems, but to hopefully get an explaination as to the cause). Because I NEVER got a response... I switched brands. If their customer service/quality control can't respond to concerns, then I'm outta there!
I am not an alarmist...and try to get to the root of an issue before making any decisions...and the lack of response over my concern about the rancid smell of the canned is what lead me to change foods.
I switched to Taste of the Wild over a year ago, which is totally grain free. I also feed raw. Eventually I will make the total switch to Raw.
