Today my father's Yorkshire Terrier was diagnosed as having diabetes.
I shamefully having to admit that my father has been feeding the dog low grade dog food, Pedigree. According to dogfoodanalysis.com their response to the food is deplorable and nothing nice has been said to this food.
This is what they had to say about the food under cons (Note: nothing was listed on the pros meaning that the food is garbage!)
Inadequate meat content, low quality grains, low quality meat products, byproducts, controversial filler, fat of unidentifiable origin, artificial colorant, chemical preservatives
As I learn more about the quality of dog food that's out there I'm also educating my father on the quality of food hes feeding to his dogs.
What are some very good quality dog food thats designed for dogs that has diabetes?
The dog food company, pedigree will be hearing from me very soon about how terrible their food is!!!!

Don,
I'm asking for an intelligent answer.... not something that a borderline retard would say.
Please keep your childish crap to your own threads.

Hi..
check out this website:
I am feeding a 50/50 with TOTW, but eventually will be preparing my own raw due to the expense (100 pound dog)
For a little dog, this would be cost effective as well as healthy :-) (and convenient)
If you Google Raw Meat Dog or BARF for Dogs, you should come up with even more info.
Good Luck

First off, thank you for your mature words and I didn't say anything, I wrote.
Secondly, nobody forced your father to feed any type of food. It was his decision and his responsibilty to research his dog food. Pedigree puts out a product. They don't claim to be better than what their product provides. It is a cheap, inexpensive dog food for dogs. Would you get pissed if your dad's Yugo didn't perform the same as a ferrari and proceed to call Yugo?
By the way, I still love you even though you are very politically incorrect.

Brittany,
You won't particularly like this, but your father should be speaking to his VET about what to feed the dog. Diabetes is a terrible disease, but if it is properly controlled with food and/or medication, it can be managed. One cannot simply go out and decide what is the best food, based on what we might feed an otherwise "normal" dog, and feed that. So suggest your father speak at length with the vet.
Good luck to him and the dog.

well said Hodie, the only point I would differ in is that (in general) most vets will point you towards some sort of (overpriced) prescription diet.
IMO, a healthy diet change (along with meds if warranted) is a good path, and getting away from the garbage kibble is a good first step. And yes, it is up to the owner to research, ask questions, and read labels to educate themselves.

Don,
You just suggested that my father should start feeding his sicken dog lead... what do you mean you didn't say anything? You made a smart ass remark which I have no time to deal with. If you want to be a smart ass then create your own thread... Don't compromise my thread with childish crap.
You're correct one one thing... nobody forced my father to feed pedigree to his dogs. My father is ignorant when it comes to proper nutrients in canines but hes becoming better at noticing poor low quality dog food.
Hodie,
You're right my father should be speaking to his vet about what to feed his dog, however the last time I visited his vets office I saw huge stocks of science diet prescription dog food waiting to be picked up... I think bias would be involved in the decision. I honestly do not fully trust the vets professional opinion on canine nutrients when they sell dog food that has inadequate meat content, by-products, low quality grains, fat of unidentifiable origin like science diet. I bet you millions that most vets who sells science diet don't have their dogs on the food.
My intentions of creating this thread is to see what brand of dog food people are feeding to their diabetic dogs and what are the success rate in the quality of dog food.

Brittany,
I appreciate that you believe, as do I, that too many vets have biases in what they recommend to feed (such as science diet), but for diabetic people and dogs, the diet must be carefully controlled and a fair amount of variation may exist from day to day and time of day to time of day as to what and how much the dog should be fed. So what I am saying is that it is HIGHLY individualized. If your father is not comfortable with his vets' advice, I bet he will find another one. It is nice of you to try to help him.

I can't freaking believe you Hodie...You just dominate every topic on this board. What ever happened to when you were boo hooing and told us you'd never come back here.
I use to respect you but I have none for you now.
You've become a real bitch.
Brittany,
A "meat" based low carb food would be best for your dad's pup. We recommend it at our vet's office. My vet doesn't buy into the Science Diet Crap. He even suggests raw.
Tell you dad to get the Freestyle blood glucose meter to test the Yorkie. Most accurate meter for both dogs and cats.
Good Luck
