Ever noticed how cats take on the personailities of the GSDs they are raised with? Here is a short video clip on a cat raised by a person who has had GSDs for over 40 years and always had cats in the house with them.  Many of the cats take on the personailties of the GSDs.  This cat learned to fetch a small ball and does it on command with no treats ever used.  Just learned by watching the shepherds do the same.  This same individual has had litters in the past where the GSD mamas accepted orphan kitties and baby rabbits to nurse and raise.

Hi Preston,

I too have a cat that fetches. And he is the boss, as have all my cats been in their lifetimes, of the GSDs here. The GSDs love the cats...but I supervise carefully anyway.

Hope all is well with you and you are staying cool!

regards........

Have 4 GDS and 5 cats ( Maine Coons). No problem with them living together.  The cats have selected "their"dog(s). They will sleep in the crates with them, and groom their faces and ears. Dogs will also groom the cats and sometimes play gently with them. It's funny to see that!

Yes Hodie, staying cool.  Thanks for the kind regards.  The relationship of cats to GSDs can be remarkable.  Our cat comes when we call him, but first he turns his head and pretends he doesn't hear us.  Then after a delay of about 15 seconds he comes and jumps on us if we are sitting down.  Our male shepherd defers to him when they play and walks away after a minute or so like he is bored.  Our alpha bitch who runs the home however will play with him for a long time but in the end will never let him win and usually ends the "mock fight" by holding him down with her paw and then licking him all over like he is her baby puppy, followed by an attempt to nurse him.  Our cat is a russian blue and became very aggressive as he took on the personality of our GSDs.  When folks come to the door he runs down to great them along with our shepherds.  He seems to think he is just as big as the shepherds.

He loves to jump on the GSDs, ambush them from behind furniture and loves to swat at them in play. His favorite trick is to run at them and jump straight up with his back arched hissing, and try to scare them.  When he tries this it never works and the shepherds just look at us with an expression of "you gotta be kidding".  He always sleeps next to our alpha bitch on the couch and he seems to think she really is his mama, as does she.  What a blessing GSDs and cats can be.

 Preston,

I too enjoy very much the interaction of my cats and dogs. Though I supervise them carefully, it gives me great pleasure to watch how much they clearly enjoy each other. Your household sounds like a great movie....maybe take some video and submit it to a TV program!

It is bloody hot here and will get worse the next few days. We have had almost no moisture all year....but last night did finally get probably an inch downpour. Waiting now for the summer monsoon to start up which will bring some relief.

Take care.
