Does anyone have any suggestions for eliminating the cause of urine burns on lawns? Before you answer (so we aren't redundant) this is what I have found out so far:
1. Usually caused by excess protein in the food
2. Releases excess nitrogen in urine which causes the grass to burn.
3. If you can water the urine spot quickly, it will dilute the nitrogen and prevent burn. (and yes, can create greener grass as nitrogen is a fertilizer and used on lawns.
4. There are over the counter - in-the-food additives which will negate the nitrogen concentration before the dog pees...
I have been feeding the same food... and didn't have this problem previously. The only thing I can think of as far as any diet change is I have been giving Bully Stix more frequently. I'm thinking this is the problem. What are your opinions?
Is there a safe, non chemical solution to neutralize the urine other than the over the counter remedies?
I hate to give up the Bully Stix, but I have to have some form of entertainment chews for my dog. I don't use rawhide, and the butcher has been out of marrow bones which is my other choice. Thanks....

H2O
I always train my dog to pea in one place, makes it easier for me to controll the burns. Water works but it has to be done right after the accident and you need to use quite bit of water.

Apple Cider Vinegar- a teaspoon in the dogs drinking water is supposed to stop the urine burns.
Also for information- Apple Cider Vinegar contains 19 of the 22 minerals essential for health in dogs. It contains natural malic and tartaric acids which inhibits unfriendly bacteria and helps to fight toxins in the body. If raw meaty bones are soaked in ACV it helps to aid the digestion. A teaspoon in a dogs food will also help to remove tear stains in light coloured dogs. I hope this helps.

Thanks Snajper69, you are very welcome
Thanks for the link too. It was really interesting to read all the positive feedback on the uses of ACV

Me again
I've been using ACV for several months now (unfiltered from Health food store)... but it sounds interesting to soak the RMB in it....
I add it to my dogs food...he loves it.
Thanks for the feedback so far...

I have a very interesting book on 'things to do with vinegar' ,stopping urine stains on lawns is one remedy, but the book says ordinary malt vinegar is also ok, just a teaspoon in the dogs water all the time, nuetralises the acid, best of luck

I worked in the gardening business for a number of years. Canine urine (K9P) is a GREAT herbicide. Urine is naturally rather acidic, so I really don't understand how adding another acid (vinegar, which contains acetic acid) to a dog's diet will prevent it from burning your lawn. The only thing I can think of that will help will be watering the lawn frequently to dilute the urine. You can change the dog's diet to make the urine more alkaline, but that will predispose him/her to bladder stones (urinary calculi).

I had the pills that are supposed to lower the PH, Green Ums I think they are called. I was dog sitting and the lady swore her dog had no reason to be in a kennel, the bottle was on a kitchen counter and I came home to a convulsing dog. The dog ate the whole bottle of 500 pills and OD'd, he was on an IV for 3 days and a retarded vet bill followed! I am not into using anything to alter the dog's body at all now! (The Methanine in the pills is what lowers the PH, and it lowered his too much)
So I tought my dogs they have to pee only in the bark, and poop too. This makes clean up a breeze, and I didn't teach Sasha until she was 2, and Jager when I got him at 6 months. Now I have these two pups and it has been less than a week and they both understand that they go to the bark to potty.
It took just a week or so with the big dogs, and I have a beautiful green lawn!! Not to mention no fear of ever stepping in poop in the grass, or mulching it up with the mower YUCK
