The other day one of my pups developed a swelling on his upper lip, and the upper gumline. The pup is apx 10 weeks old, and was just given a clean bill of health by the vet last Tuesday.

The swelling localized to the immediate area, and while painful to the touch when I examined it the pup still eats, drinks, gnaws on chewies, and plays with his brother without hesitation.

At this point he's been swollen since last afternoon -- less than 24hours. He doesn't seem in any discomfort when I touch his muzzle or face(unless I lift up his lip to look at the gums). I wonder if he's been munching on bees; we don't have venomous snakes or scorpions were I'm at.

One of my old dogs was a dedicated bee-hunter despite my attempts to disuade her. Her face would swell up like a Shar-Pei's, but the swelling went down within a few hours. The pup's swelling has lasted into this morning.

Any suggestions to reduce the swelling (ice chips?) or should I just let him alone for a bit and see if it goes down on its own?

Ice is always a good idea.

The dog is unlikely to tolerate your putting ice on its lip for long or at all.

It will not hurt the pup to try an antihistamine. Call your vet for an appropriate does and get some over the counter diphenhydramine, trade name called Benadryl, and try it. If the dog is not in any real discomfort, you might also consider just watching it to see if it gets worse or better. If it is not his gum that is swelling, the chances are slim that it is an infection. If you see no sign of injury where it is swollen, it may well be a bee sting. If you have a marker pen that can outline the area swollen, it will give some idea about whether it is better or worse in a few hours. But if on a darkened area, it may be impossible to see well. If the swelling gets worse, then perhaps a trip to your vet would be in order.

Good luck.

My thought would be to check the upper teeth, a small crack or chip/break of a canine can create the swelling also. Pups can play rough and can break off a tip of a canine.
