Good to see you back keepthefaith. Not much to disagree with, but not much of a choice either: the occasional moody, perhaps not-overly-bright dolt from Arizona with a temper (and continuance of Bush status quo?), or the slicker and quick-on-his-feet Obama. Not to be ignored, the Evangelists, a powerful political bloc (courted by both re-born Bush Junior and Senior), as for various other Christian Fundamentalists, traditionally vote Republican. They’d probably favor McCain on other counts too. Anyone not taken with Obama’s looks misses out likewise on punishing the Republicans for Iraqi War and other Bush misdeeds! The joys of a two-part system! A rigged chessboard really: all members of the same elite club, merely switching chairs depending on voter mood. McCain or Obama, can it really make any difference?

So far, I’m surprised by apparent absence of solidly spelled-out policies. Except for vague rhetoric on Iraqi troop withdrawal (with more for Afghanistan) and some mooted tax proposals, I’m bereft as to he specimens are meant to represent. The affair appears largely reliant on personality, a flow of motherhood statements and endearing homilies: See what a nice plausible person I am, and please vote for me! (As eventually rounded off with some glibly controlled, televised ‘debate’.) Absurd! Not at all what a healthy democracy is meant to be about! Yet the mainstream media, amazingly, if not most of electorate, happily swallows this sham! Such the paragon democratic model hailed to the rest of the world! No wonder US publishers are apt to advise overseas book-selling authors to allow for the fact that the American reader isn’t really as bright or well informed as European counterparts!

I doubt Bush understands economics to any real degree, but putting aside the cost of the two wars - with trillions of dollars worth of oil at stake, who knows, it may yet pay for itself (taxpayers foot the invasion bill, big business reaps the reward?) - his influence over the economy is slight. The Federal Reserve holds the levers, and here I blame Greenspan for allowing credit to boom to the extent it did. The oil situation, as for the impact of globalization and borrowings/budget deficits etc, was perfectly foreseeable and should have been planned for or dealt with years ago. Trouble is, politicians are largely driven by knee-jerk or short-term solutions as only relevant from one election to the next. Our children or grandchildren aren’t voters, which is also why dealing in any sort of constructive way with something like climate change and other serious environmental issues aren’t even really part of the agenda!

I’m only surprised our unfettered capitalism advocates here haven’t commented on the Feds bailout of the country’s two big home mortgage underwriters.

I tend to agree about the quality of the candidates for the upcoming presidential election. One (1) thing that disturbs me about both candidates (and their parties) is that neither has affirmed the ideas contained inside our Bill of Rights. One, a "community activist" cum glib junior Senator from Illinois and the other a battle-scarred older man whose greatness is linked to that of his father. At the very least, the latter did fearlessly serve his country, was captured, tortured, and lived to present himself today.

But, being a miltary hero alone does not make one a champion of the things that make America great-at least the nation of that I am a member. But I realize that we are many nations here-all in competition for "this is my interpretation of the American Dream." I say this as criticism of the majority of voting citizens of the U.S.A.-having been one myself since obtaining citizenship in 1981 and voting at every opportunity. I can rightfully criticise my own nation here, as well as the other nations that live here.

We have the nation of the "I don't really know's" who tend to not read anything in depth and have affirmed that the nightly entertainment from Hollywood and/or Madison Avenue and professional sports industry is much more important than reading and researching the news-all the news. We have the nation of the "professionally entertained"-give us glamour-give us shock-we'll provide the "awe" as we are accustomed and entitled to having audio/visual entertainment 24/7/365. We have the nation of the "entitled by birthright" who feel that the Man owes them something. blame their despair and sorry affairs on the actions or inactions of others. We have the nation of "it's not my fault" who blames their despair and sorry lives on the actions or inactions of others.

But, my nation is a republic that is whose principles are balanced by the ideas of democracy. Strange combination of sorts, but one that works as long as the balance is kept. All men are NOT created equal-that is a Fatherhood of God idea from the framers of our Constitution and one that we seek to continue its interpretation. If we are lucky; we grasp our first breath upon the escape from our mothers' wombs and determine the outcome of our lives by our own initiative while abiding to some degree with the constraints of our environment. I think the expression "Jeder macht Seins" is irrefutable here, as in the end we are each responsible for ourselves.

There are so many things that make America great. But in my opinion neither candidate; their respective party, handlers, writers, and press corps seem to have a grasp on my interpretation of America. So, until the arrival of 2012, this is the best we can do and we must deal with it.

Nope. There's one man that can though.. and he's mighty straight forward.

Check this crap out ..  wazzzz up wit dis... our "new" Bill of Rights ? Like why isn't this in the Media ?

Notice how they changed the word to "IN" alienable as in "right to live" or "collective asset" verses the US Constitution which in fact is "UN" alienable meaning "gift from the creator to a the individual" also meaning can NOT be taken. BIG difference.

This Charter gets interesting too, because it was adopted by the GS on September 11, 2001 in Lima Peru. Unalienable = You can not surrender, sell or transfer unalienable rights, they are a gift from the creator to the individual and can not under any circumstances be surrendered or taken. All individual's have unalienable rights.

Inalienable = You can surrender, sell or transfer inalienable rights if you consent either actually or constructively. Inalienable rights are not inherent in man and can be alienated by government. Persons have inalienable rights.

Democrat presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama today faulted the “weakness of the Bush administration” for Iran’s recent long-range missile testing, and said when he sits in the Oval Office “Iran will know that we mean talk.”

The Illinois senator said he would engage Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in face-to-face negotiations offering “carrots as well as sticks,” meaning that he would “reward Iranian goodwill gestures with stirring laudatory speeches, and punish Iran’s violations of U.N. resolutions with bold rhetorical rebukes.”

“We know that President Ahmadinejad wants to see Israel wiped off the face of the map,” said Sen. Obama, “Of course, the first step in negotiating is to determine what the other party wants that you might be able to provide”

“Iran needs to know that our words mean something,” he said. “During the Obama administration, our words will mean that we are saying things by combining those words into sentences to express ideas about how we feel, using dramatic phrases and dynamic cadences. Iran must never question our resolve to deliver…speeches.”

While the Bush administration has tried to get allies to unite in applying pressure on Iran to halt its nuclear program, Sen. Obama said he would bring change to American foreign policy by trying to get U.S. allies to unite in applying pressure on Iran to halt its nuclear program.

“It’s a lot different than the Bush approach,” he said, “because in my strategy, there is no Bush.”

Almodovar, the interesting thing about economic booms and downturns is that the supporters of each president invariably will argue that it was the policies of the president that resulted in an economic boom but when it comes to a recession, the very same supporters will argue that the economy is not within the control of any president. So we have Republicans who argue ad nauseum that it was Reagan's policies that resulted in the economy growing but the growth in the economy during the Clinton years had nothing to do with Bill's policies!

Well, there is some truth to what you say about the Fed having perhaps more influence on what happens to the economy but in the case of the current administration a lot of the damage has been done as a result of uncontrolled deficit spending. Bush sought to lower taxes and allowed uncontrolled spending by a Republican Congress causing the deficit to balloon. He did not veto a single spending bill in the first six years of being in office - and only when the Democrats took control of Congress did he veto a spending bill. Add to that the spending on the war and it is now time to pay the piper. Greenspan, in his testimony, supported tax cuts provided that federal spending was reduced. We saw the former without the latter.

I saw this black comedian on Jay Leno a few days ago who was joking that he wants to thank Bush for his contribution to the advancement of blacks. He went on to say that after Bush's disastrous period in office, white America said "enough" - let us elect a black president because he can't possibly screw up any worse than Bush did! He was joking but the irony is that there is some truth to what he says because if Bush had not messed up as badly as he did, I seriously doubt that Obama would have gained the traction that he has done given his lack of experience.

RPK, like I said in the prior thread, I am not enthralled with Obama but I will say that he is absolutely right that the way to deal with international disputes - whether Iran or any other country - is to try and negotiate with them. Don't forget that Bush did not want to negotiate with North Korea either and finally did so very reluctantly because we were over-committed in terms of our armed forces in Iraq and Afghanistan precluding military action against North Korea. Even Reagan believed that the way to deal with enemies was to negotiate. It is only Bush with his cowboy mentality who feels negotiating implies weakness!  Of course, he and the other neo-cons who are so convinced in the merits of military action made sure that they did not fight in Vietnam when it was their chance to serve the country.
