Good Evening Everyone,

I have a question about breeding. My female had her first litter in March, however, in order for her to conceive the stud dog owner had to hold her back in up and guide the stud in and he had to hold her until they were tied.  Now this my my female and his male first time ever breeding. Do you all think this happened because they were both inexperienced or simply because my female didn't want to breed? How common of practice is it for a female to have to be held in order to breed?

The stud dog owner said that his stud would try but my girl would never let him get her thats why he held her. Also a little more history, my female has never swelled real big whenever she came in season. She was bigger than she was when she wasn't in heat but she never had a really large vulva like most females do when they are in season, could this have been the problem and do you think on her subsequent cycles after having a litter of 9 her vulva will swell large like a normal female? The stud owner said maybe she wasn't in full heat as the reason why she didn't swell but i'd like to think if she conceived a litter she was in full heat. Any thoughts?

Sorry for so many questions, Im just curious because I've never had a female who was like this.

Thanks

Seems pretty common to me that the dogs are supervised during breeding. Would you rather them be left alone with the potential of your female injuring the male?

Firstly, if she had a litter of 9 she must have been in full heat! I have a female whose vulva does not swell much, she also does not bleed much during her heat. She has been difficult to get pregnant but has had two litters, her vulva still does not swell much. I think it is quite common for females to be held during breeding, some stud dog owners virtually always do this as they are worried that the dog will get tired or may get injured if the female is aggressive, or they just want to get it done more quickly than is usual with the natural method. Sometimes if the female is small and the male is big it helps to hold and lift the female slightly. I much prefer to let them get on with it on their own whenever possible, even if it takes a bit longer. Sometimes they breed within the first minute but some females (especially their first time) seem to need to time to run around, play and "flirt" with the male first before actualy mating, and may initially snap at him even if they are ready, this was probably the case with your female.

I would never want injuries to occur but I just figured when its that time animals are driven by nature to reproduce. I didn't think it needed human intervention. I thought it was more common to have natural breedings but I guess I was wrong. Thanks for the response.

That is considered a "natural breeding", a not natural breeding would be an artificial insemination.

With the value of some stud dogs and the fact that their breeding career can be ended if he breaks his os penis........or as my husband says "splinters his wood"!  Or a females cerevix can be torn!
