They did a bust in one highschool in Montreal ( for drugs cause we don't have lots of guns round here) People reacted very strongly against it pretending it was against individual right to be looked at without a mandate from the police..But it worked..they found a lot of drugs..

So It was the end of it..now if they want to do it..they need to have a really good reason and get a mandate.

I think it is a good ideas in really violent schools we're there is lots of drugs..and lots of guns..people are very intimidated by police  dogs..they know the dog will find something if they have any.  I have nothing against it..If you did nothing wrong..i don't know why you should be nervous about dogs doing their jobs..

Drop this into Google  to see a totally different use for dogs in schools - Reading Education Assistance Dogs.  Kids with reading problems read outloud to the dogs ( not their humans_ and do better because the dog doesn't judge their reading skills.

Twice a year our school district does a random sweep of the high school and middle school using drug dogs from our county sheriff's dept.  They send the dog and his handler to check all lockers and various parts of the building.  The search is unannounced and only school officials receive word when this search will be conducted.  They've been fortunately successful in locating drugs in the schools.  Unfortunately they have found drugs as serious as cocaine in the middle school level. Which is rather scary IMO considering these kids are pretty much still babies.

I myself am all for this and feel it should be done more often but unfortunately if the local police dept does not have their own dog and has to rely on the county's dogs then we are limited to how often they'd be available to assist.

I had a rottie x gsd mutt that was part of a reading assistance program. She was also trained to do all sorts of little tricks, both verbal and hand-signal. Since she was a dwarf (17" at the shoulder, full grown!) she had this wonderful puppy-like appearence that everyone gravitated to. I wouldn't mind raising another "reading dog." It was really a lot of fun.

I am a school district police officer.  In previous years our school used a contract company for narcotics/weapons detection.  Beginning August 2008, I will begin full time K9 duties for our schools.  This will include narcotics detection and K9 presentations.
