I believe it was Dennis Johnson who had a hell of a sable bitch as a demo at the NASS last year. WOW. She was a rocket. Perhaps he'll see this thread and be kind enough to post her pedigree.

Of course the females are important.

In my opinion, the female accounts for more than the male....you can have the best male in the world, bred to a nothing female, you will get nothing. Breed a better than average male to a super female, you get results.

The problem wherein lies with the people who breed the latest flavor, who know nothing about breeding or the actual dogs they have their finger on, and match their less than average female up with a "big name male" in hopes that something will come." Or, more often, with puppies that will sell. Most people breeding have no right to do so, in my opinion. They do it for all the wrong reasons, misguided by money or lack of knowledge needed or the morality of their actions.

Look at this website and the countless litters that are advertised. Who here really believes that these dogs need bred to better the breed? Every litter bred undeserving, limits the ability of the professionals to place quality dogs in the homes needed.

Look at the recent discussions of the "top stud dogs" in the US......many of the people who responded have never titled a dog, trained a dog for top sport, or know jack about breeding. But, they bought some dog out of some dog, whom they love, and purpetuate that this dog is the end all to the German Shepherd Dog. This press, by people who don't truly have the right to an educated or public opinion of respect, brings about more dog sales from "this dog" and contributes to the watering down of the true dogs in this country that should see breedings. Breedings that will produce dogs for the work purposes needed and sought out for in this country.

Recently, I sat at a table discussion after training. A very new person to the sport asked my friend whom is an SV Judge, "Who is the best dog in Germany to breed to right now?" My friend answered, "Why do you need to go to Germany to find a stud? You have many good dogs here in America to breed to." He was puzzled by this and asked again. My German friend stated " Why do you think that you have to go to Germany to find a stud?" My SV friend mentioned my Stuka, and said that "you will find no better dog for breeding in Germany." But, this man would not listen to it because Stuka is not a point dog with 290+ point trials, and this man had in his head the notion that nothing in America was worth breeding to. This very new person to the breed, whom has never titled or trained a dog, or shown at a National level event, sat and tried to argue with a German SV Judge of 30 plus years what he thought. This is the American problem. It is furthered by the internet and a poor system that allows amatuers at best, to squabble with the pros. It is the equivalent of an eighth grade quarterback telling Dan Marino how to be a better passer. Nonsense.....

I rarely post, but these topics on breedings get me hot because I'm so passionate about the dogs that we should be producing.

Sorry grimmdog that this is your view on all the "breeders". I don't know enough of who is under all the different names to know who knows what. My thought would be, if you act like everybody doesn't have a clue and doesn't want a clue, you're not helping the situation because who wants to listen to that? why not, if you have the knowledge, share it? If your complaint is that people are uneducated about breeding and should therefore never breed, what are you doing to help them learn about it?

For me personally, I have titled a few dogs, member of sch3 club, etc....Trained dogs the majority of my life, and in 8 years of schutzhund (yes a comparative newbie in some circles) have been pouring over pedigrees, what is said to produce what, and asked a lot of people a lot of questions. Joined various pedigree discussion lists and love hearing opinions on a variety of dogs, as well as trying to learn how to get the right combination for what I want. I will breed when I have the combination I'm looking for. I co-own a couple of females and have my boys, will not breed until titled, xrayed etc (after all, it's not just a pedigree that makes a puppy ya know?). But again, for me personally, having someone act like everybody here is breeding for money or lack of knowledge or whatever, doesn't add to the knowledge base I'm trying to gain. And yes, I DO want to breed for the love of the breed. If I had wanted to do it for money I would have started that a long time ago...and heck, why even bother to title any dogs, or pay for xrays ya know? Why not go out, buy some top dog and start mass producing?

Naw, maybe your'e right. Maybe there are a lot of "breeders" out there creating dogs that should never be bred. But I don't think it's a super idea to just assume that's always the case, lump everybody together, and then not share the knowledge you say is lacking. Maybe there are those that lack the ability to sit with an open mind and pick the mind of someone who knows more then they do. I think there's a lot of ego in the dog world, and maybe that rears its ugly head. But there ARE those of us out here who are combing through as much info as possible to be able to do it right. And just because somebody hasn't bred and whelped their own litter yet doesn't mean they dont' know ANYTHING. I for one, decided not to do that until I have learned enough to do it right. Spend some time around mentor breeders I trust, learned as much as possible etc. Point being, don't lump everybody then not share.

That being said, I think "whose the best" in both stud and female is  a really hard question to answer. If the question was "who has everybody seen a nice puppy out of" it would be a little easier.

The other problem is, why try to find out who the flavor of the month is, when in reality you should be trying to complement the dogs. Meaning, if I have a female, I want to take her strengths to the table and complement her weaknesses. Just choosing some flavor of the month does not necessarily do that. So asking around on who is good doesn't serve much purpose without qualifying it with "who brings the thing to the table that would complement my dog"?

That is of course, unless the question really is, "who have you seen nice puppies out of".

What about the girls! There are endless lists of stud dogs .... Why not address the question?

Gee Nate thanks for the info.

I think it goes without saying, if the other dog is a POS your not going to get yourself anywhere, no matter the caliber of your bitch or stud.

My vote for a super nice producing bitch is...

V Jazzmine vom Ausland

SCHH1 Kkl 1                               http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/pedigree/422702.html

Yes I do own 2 pups out of her but that isn't my sole reason for adding her here.. I'd love to have one out of her 3rd litter as well.  I studied both litters so far, looking for my pic pup and couldn't find one I wouldn't take home, really (OK 1 pup was just too much dog for me and I am woman enough to reconize that fact. I had first pic and declined that female, knowing she deserved better than me as a handler). Very very nice pups and I hope to see the same with the 3rd stud choice. I think Jazzy is one of those exceptional females that will produce well, because her owner puts her with the correct males, (for her). Slapping 2 dogs together isn't going to produce well unless it's a correct match. Knowing your dog/bitch and how to research mates to compliment is all the work behind a succesfull litter. I know how hard Chris worries when he makes his choices for all of his breedings.

Also promps to Chris for not being a pompus ass and letting a lowly non dog titling idiot, such as myslef have first pick and 2 great dogs to work. Makes it a whole lot easier to become a titled handler, with correct dogs on the end of the leash. I really can't thnk him enough!
