I always forget this stuff but does the female bleed before she is receiving or after???
by DKiah on 29 November 2004 - 19:11
yes..... most females discharge for 21 - 28 days or so..... the discharge changes but often not noticeably unless you use a belt/pad so you can check..... progesterone testing is the best way to determine if the "time is right"

Unfortunately, can't always go by which day it is -
better to do the test -- it's a simple smear in the vet's office -- s/he should be able to see the changes in the shape of the cells. Then, of course, any male dog with a good nose will tell you when she's ready !!
(or should I say - when he's ready !!) Some bitches are ready so early in their cycle - others far later -
once you get a litter, you'll have a better idea of what's the best timing -- my experience is most bitches are bred too early -- watch the external signs (swelling) also - and get 2 breedings on a maiden bitch. -- more if possible.

Wat day is the best to have the test done?

My female is to young in my mind to breed being only 16 months but I know she is due to come into heat. Going to get the test ASAP. Thanks everyone for the information

I would start the smears around the 10th - 12th day - sooner or later if discharge is slowing down and turning lighter in color.
