I know this may be a little off the breed topic here, and I know there are certain breeds that you do not give Ivomectin to. Does  anyone know if it can be given to Shih-Tzus{sp}? My mother has 2 of them and is going to call the vet tomorrow to ask but I thought I would ask on here as well.

Thanks in advance

Ivomectin problems are reported in Collies and a few other herding breeds, some of whom (not all) have a mutation called mdr1-1Δ. As far as I know such a mutation has NOT been identified in your breed of interest. None the less, it is always wise to check with your own vet if you have concerns. There is now a genetic test that your vet can use to make sure a given dog does not have this mutation.

A good summary of information is available at:

If a dog can take Heartguard it can generally take Ivermectin.   But ALWAYS check with your vet before giving any medications that are "off label" use.

I have an aussie who is mutant/mutant for the MDR1 gene..1/3 of all aussies now carry it in one form or another. I have a couple of internet friends who also have GSD's that carry it.

Here are a couple of sites of interest:    http://www.vetmed.wsu.edu/depts-VCPL/

the above is WSU site, where you can also request a kit for testing your dog.   Also a list of the 'no no drugs' for mdr dogs.

This site www.busteralert.org  I think gives a really comprehensive list of no no drugs.

I have never heard of it in your breed of dog but it's always best to be informed.

Shelties have also fallen into the same catagory as the collie and aussie.  We never give ivo to any mix there of at the shelter.

What is the alternative to Ivermectin?

Is it as effective?

What brands carry the alternative?

Interceptor is the one I usually use - one dose lasts a bit longer [It is scheduled for monthly but effective for up to 60 days - they just made it once a month for labeling .  The normal dose is .5mg/kg and half that dose was protective for up to 60 days

I usually give it every 6 weeks.
