Please clarify what you mean by competition.  Different competitions may take different methods, especially for proofing the dog,  Different dogs take different methods too.

I don't think you're going to get a definitive answer on this because different dogs, handlers, training directors and situations require different methods. For instance, I taught a forced retrieve on my first sch dog, a clicker retrieve on the next, taught it through play on another, and on my current boy I taught a hold and back chained it. He couldn't stand the clicker, I wanted to keep a good attitude throughout it and yet the play would have sent his drives over the top....so I think it just depends on the dog. And yet, even the dog I used the clicker to teach the retrieve to was not trained entirely with the clicker. So I think it just depends on the situation and the dog. As long as you're able to read and adjust to the dog, match the right technique to the situation you do fine. Of course if someone DOES choose a particular style for something I think it's important to see it through....for instance, I would not have started a clicker retrieve on a dog, then the next day tried play, then the next day done force, then clicker again. I would just choose how I'm going to teach it, then stick with it for awhile. Tweak later if necessary.

The vast MAJORITY of my training is done pretty much from what I've learned from Ivan B seminars/tapes etc but I do adjust to my dog. My current dog wasn't doing as well with it and I changed style a bit to work with him. So it's more about what the dog needs.

There are many methods available to do the work...and it all depends on the dog...the handler...and the trainer...There are many steps that are also needed for doing the work...for instance...Introduction...Foundation...Teaching...Training...and Proofing a dog...It does also depend on exactly what your doing in Schutzhund such as a SchH1...SchH2...SchH3...and is this a Club Trail and the dog's first title or are you trialing for the Nationals or other...

Schutzhund has three phases, what phase are you referring to? There are many trainers who have different ideas how to teach each and every phase. Hopefully  the trainer has the ability to recognize what method or combination of methods will work with the dog and handler team and utilize the method(s) that suits them best. Our preference is to teach in increments then sequence the increments together once the dog and handler can perform them successfully and while under distraction. While we have used clicker training for some skill sets in schutzhund training but I would certainly hate to teach clicker training to someone who can not walk and chew gum at the same time so there has to be a match to the method.
