Whats the big deal about naming a dog Rommel? Hell is better then naming it Butters or fluffy for gods sakes.

Because Rommel was a notorious NAZI officer, that's why.   Have you ever thought it "odd" that you never saw a gsd named "Adolf" among all those Axels?    And not one Hitler, no matter how many "H" litters come down the pike?

i not only know some dogs named Rommel, but I know at least 2 people named Rommel.  Both are Black...their parents just liked the sound of the name and attached no particular connotation to it beforehand.

If it was my Dog and they "made" me change his name I'd switch it to Stalin!

At least the British dignitary quoted did remark about the legendary wit and will of Felmarschal Erwin Rommel, and not debase him as a "Nazi". I do strongly disagree that he was a "notorious Nazi officer" and like to think that he was a brilliant strategist who lived in a very dark time in our history and who should be remembered for his brave attempt to rid the world of the evil bastard named Adolf Hitler. That failed attempt cost Erwin Rommel his life-by his own hand.

Now I'll get off of my soapbox, and leave history lie.

Regards,

Bob-O

He was a Nazi officer--and committed acts in furtherance of the Nazi plans.  No way around that .   He may hve had a "Saul" moment later, but that does not negate his place as a "notorious Nazi" commander.

My German grandfather was named Adolf and I couldn't have had a greater grandfather. He did everything he could to get his family out of Germany, they finally made it to America after the war was over for quite some time.

Names bring up bad memories and I would never make light of someone else's suffering, nightmares, or what they have lived through. So please, don't think I am making light of another's suffering or loss.

My dog's have names like Loki (Norse god of mischief or called the trickster, Isis, the queen to Osiris the god of the underworld and afterlife).  My nutty super religious neighbor calls my dogs, "evil spawn of Satan" and me a "pagan devil worshipper" since I named my dogs after false gods, of course she calls me an "evil Nazi" since I am first generation german, so it takes all kinds.

Hey, I loved the VW commercials "Pimp da auto" and the guy with the bad german accent
