K-9 dog killed after Broward deputies trail suspect to Miami Beach

A K-9 dog from the Broward Sheriff's Office was shot to death early Thursday after a chase that began in Oakland Park ended with gunfire outside a Miami Beach hospital.

The suspect, identified as Delvin Lewis, 27, suffered "non-life threatening injuries" during the gun battle with deputies and was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital, the Sheriff's Office said.

The Sheriff's Office said deputies responded to a report of gunfire in the 300 block of Northeast 35th Court in Oakland Park about 12:30 a.m. Thursday.

"It appears the incident began as a domestic dispute, where the boyfriend fired his weapon and fled the scene (the girlfriend was not injured)," the Sheriff's Office said in a statement.

Lewis fled the scene, but was spotted by police at Commercial Boulevard and Interstate 95. He was trailed to outside of Mt. Sinai Hospital in Miami Beach, where Lewis opened fire and killed the K-9 dog, the Sheriff's Office said.

No information was available on charges against Lewis.

How sad.  Condolences to his handler and family.  I hope their laws are such that it's the same as killing a human officer.

Our condolences to the partner (handler) and the family.  Being in a family with several working K-9s this really hits home.  Hopefully justice will be served when it comes time to sentence this scumbag!!!!

Authorities: K-9 dog fatally shot by suspect
MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- The Broward Sheriff's Office is mourning the loss of a K-9 dog that it says was fatally shot by a suspect.

Officers were trailing a man who fled after firing shots during a domestic dispute with his girlfriend north of Fort Lauderdale early Thursday. The woman was not hurt.

Officers followed the suspect -- identified as 27-year-old Delvin Lewis -- to Miami Beach. Authorities say Lewis then opened fire near Mount Sinai Medical Center, killing the canine. Police returned fire, and Lewis was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

Charges are pending.

My condolences to the K9's partner and fellow officers.

Too bad Delvin Lewis's injuries were not life threatening.. More time at the range.

Delvin probably positioned himself at the hospital so that the officers didn't have a clear shot without serious risk to civilians.

Why do women get involved with scumbags like Delvin.

What the hell is in the water in Broward county?!

by DDRshep on 17 July 2008 - 21:07

My question is irrelevant in the bigger picture of this incident, but simply out of curiosity, since I have not seen many GSD/Mali crosses: Is the police dog in the picture a GSD/Mali cross?
