I have a 10 week old german shepherd puppy, and he had a thorough vet examination this afternoon. She said that she wasn't sure she could feel both testicals. I personally am pretty sure I have felt both prior to this appointment, however Im not completely sure I was doing this correctly. Does anybody know how this is properly done? Are there any statistics on how often they do drop if they haven't by this age?

I was told years ago by a vet university it can take up to 9 months. When the inguinal ring closes where they are, they will stay. I think the best way to check is to put the pup in a sit position. I wouldn't panic yet though, if they aren't there.

Testicles often move up and down until the inguinal ring closes. That normally happens fairly early on. If the testicle can move up because it is small and the opening large, it can do this one minute and a few minutes later, with activity, there it is again.

I would not worry about it just yet, but if it is not there by 4 months, the chances become much less that it will ever get there. And too many people are NOT very competent really making sure both are or are not there. Especially when the pup is very young, it can be difficult to ascertain.

I just got a male from the Czech Republic who had a testicle that kept disappearing and so, for the trip here, a vet urologist put a single stitch in his scrotum through the outer edge of the testicle to hold it down. We left that there for two weeks and now the ring is closed and both testicles are permanently there.
