Got the July/August issue of Schutzhund USA today.  Read the NBW's column wherein he discusses the protection phase of this year's SS.  Read for yourself but here's the gist:

"The Performance phase of the Sieger Show always generates a lot of Internet talk and USA has been slowly raising the standard the last several years.  After the 2008 Show the BAC [Breed Advisory Committee] has decided that we need to be more aggressive in raising the standard of this phase of the Show.  This problem is not unique to USA; the SV also recognizes that the protection work also needs to be improved in the dogs shown in Germany.......The BAC discussed several ideas and we decided to start with the rewriting of the current guidelines for judging of this phase.  The guidelines now in place....do not give the Performance Phase Judge sufficient latitude to dismiss dogs with marginal work.  We must make sure that when a dog receives pronounced we truly mean "pronounced",..."

Discuss amongst yourselves.....

At least they addressed it and didn't pretend it never happened, as I half expected to happen.

Thank you UScA for listening, recognizing this as a serious problem,  and taking steps to address the issue and hopefully implementing changes so that what happened in San Jose will not be repeated.

Not really trying to be picky, but the organization is USA (United Schutzhund Clubs of America) and the organization's magazine is called Schutzhund USA.    Not trying to be bitch, but it just frosts me when the organizatin is called Schutzhund USA, when that is NOT the organization's name.   What appears in the magazine is the organizations first official response to the travesty, if not spoof, of protection work in the SS.  Hopefully, as indicated by the National Breed Warden, the second response will be revised guidelines, so that the performance judge can award "a" only to those dogs that actually deserve it, and ash-can more of the deficients.

Yes we addressed it, no we didn't pretend it didn't happen, though I'm sure many wished it hadn't - and yes hopefully now changes will be made.

Molly,

Where is the Sieger Show next year?  Kentucky?

by eichenluft on 16 July 2008 - 23:07

There are two bids being considered - one in the Chicago area, one in KY.

Who called it that?  Did a miss an edit?  I referred to the response in the magazine and sueincc referred to the organization.  What are you talking about?

the part that bothers me is "slowly raising the standard the last several years".

2 questions

1- how many more years before it is up to par with the way dogs are judged in protection at at national event?  after all we are talking about Schutzhund 3 dogs.

2  why cant the change just be made,  have it done and over with.  either you pass or you dont.

judge the dog on its performance and not its pedigree.   how hard can this be.
