Hello! Anybody here can help me with callous problem? My GSD has a callous on his hind leg and it's getting infected. Last month I treated my dog with antibiotics and the swelling subsided substantially but now I notice it's starting to swell again. Anybody here can suggest a good topical medicine for callouses? I will start him on oral antibiotics but I also have to get rid of the callous otherwise it will irritate becomes infected again. Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated. Tnx!

Bag Balm works well. Before you treat, you must keep the dog off the hard surface causing the problem. If not, any treatment will be just a waste of time.

I asked this question some time ago but on my girls elbow. There were alot of good suggestions. I ended up using a product called New Skin a couple times a day that worked for her. http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/bulletins_read/61375.html

Also if you search the database, there are more threads concerning elbow callous, should be about the same has on the back leg I am thinking. Good luck.

Eucerin lotion applied 2-3 times a day will make is disappear also, but if it is infected, I would see your vet for sometthing medicated. I imagine if it's only slightly infected, neosporin may help.

I used the lotion to clear up ugly elbow callouses on my dogs, and it worked like a charm, only to discover their elbows bleeding after a few hours in their kennel. Unattractive though they are, they are necessary if your dog spends time on rough srufaces, and I have never tried to remove them again.

chinito,

What is causing this infection??    Keep the dog's area clean, keep the flies and knat's away with a medicated salve and if your using antibiotic's, make sure you follow the instruction's of your vet and don't stop using them prematurely.

If the dog is living on concrete please find something to cover the floor, try standing on concrete all day, it will cause damage.

i think it's the constant pressure when he's lying down thats causing the infection. My kennel run is made up of concrete but he doesn't  lie down on it that much. It's more on the cages flooring I think. The floor on my cages are plastic that has a rectangular holes of about  1 inch by 1/4 inch. I don't know if you guys are familiar with this kind of flooring.

Chinito,

You might try a disinfectant spray around the kennel area.

Something other than his laying on it is causing the infection.     And constant exposure to concrete is hard on feet and joint's.
