Brittany

Can someone send me (or to the thread) a list of ingredients in dog food thats known to cause skin irritation and allergies?

I've been noticing lately that Zambi has been itching herself. I check the areas that shes been chewing herself on and the skin is pink. I treat her monthly on frontline plus and I don't see 1 flea/tick on her so that's not the problem. Jake has been itching as well.

I'm in the process of changing her food (as I suspect it's the food thats causing it) from platinum dog food to Orjen. I will have to wait and to see if it is indeed the food thats causing her to itch.

I know corn & yeast can cause major issues, especially with ears. The chemicals used to make some dog foods has also been known to cause issues. Maybe this article will help: http://www.buzzle.com/articles/the-facts-about-dog-food-allergies.html
Good luck getting it straightened up!

Brittany sometimes my dogs itch when they are blowing coat...

You will find that in dogs with Atopy it tends to be the protein source that dogs are allergic to chicken being the worst, then Turkey. . I have only ever had 1 dog allergic to a carb source and that was wheat.

I would lower the protein level to below 21% and remove any wheat from the diet - its made a big difference to my dogs.

Pharaoh

I used to have a dog who was allergic to vegetable oils (sunflower, flax etc), soy and mold. That knocked out all the premium dog foods and then I switched to raw meaty bones only. No more allergies.

I once had a dog who was allergic to eggs. That knocked out most dog foods, premium or otherwise. I found out about the egg allergy by doing an elimination diet with the cooperation of my vet, who supplied the meds to treat the allergy problem.

But before you assume food allergies, think about what is in the dog's environment (new carpet, new flooring, new chemicals of any kind that the dog is exposed to or something the dog comes in contact with) and whether the dog is shedding a lot or not. Blowing coat does cause itching and you have to brush daily to get the dead hair out.

Working Dogs

I've just got my report back from a blood test on my 8 year old SchH3 that in the last few months has appeared to be scratching more. I'm in the UK so it won't be of much help to some but interesting nonetheless.

N - Negative (0 - 149)

B - Borderline (150 - 199)

P - Positive (200 - 399)

Foods

Beef 115 N - Rabbit 132 N - Chicken 218 P - Pork 109 N - Venison 127 N - Eggs 136 N - Milk 124 N - Soybean 105 N

Corn (Maize) 218 P - Wheat 132 N - Lamb 105 N - Rice 146 N - Turkey 228 P - Sorghum 115 N - Oatmeal 135 N -

Barley 166 B - White Potato 128 N - Brewers Yeast 273 P - Kelp 134 N - Tomato Pomace 127 N - Fish Mix 118 N -

Carrots 145 N - Peas 132 N - Duck 106 N

The report shows allergies to other things too, like various tree varieties, grasses, weeds, fungi, house dust, indoor materials, insects and malassezia.

A few sectors, epidermals, fleas and staph showed no allergies.

After changing his food for a week there is already a massive improvement in the amount of scratching and I'm fairly sure avoiding the food ingredients will do the trick, despite being allergic to some of the other things than can be pretty much avoided.

It did mean changing my supplier though as not one of their premium foods was free of at least one of the ingredients. Luckily a replacement of equal quality, minus the above P ingredients was found.

Working Dogs - have you looked at some of the working breeds foods??  I have had much more luck feeding those than the premium diets.
