I saw Louise mention Tribulus in another post and I'm wondering about it's usefulness in female dogs. Is this primarily for males or does it have benefits for your bitch too?

I suggested the Tribulus to a friend whose female had irregular heats or awfully long intervals between heats. He put his bitch on the Trib to bring her into full heat, bred her--now, she has a new litter of 8.
Yes, all of this is anecdotal--so what!!

Louise, the Queen of Voodoo magic. What can you say when it works though? LOL

My bitch had a split heat and then didn't take so I'm up for trying anything. Any good sources for buying the Trib?

Just do a Google searh for the Bulgarian Tribulus terrestris (hell, it's even on Ebay, Amazon.com, etc.) The best I found is put out by NOW--1000 mg caplets. I had it special-ordered the the local natural foods coop.
I believe that my friend whose bitch conceived was one which also had a split heat.
Another stabilizing factor is to give breeding bitches 1600 mcg oral folic acid daily before she comes into heat, during gestation and lactation--throughout weaning.
Yep, 4pack: Louise, the Queen of Voodoo magic.--LOL!

Thank you very much! With breeding dogs, a little Voodoo Magic is sometimes called for.

Tribulus increases testosterone levels in males, and estradiol and progesterone levels in females. Most don't understand, that Trib is not a product designed to boost or to increase testosterone to a higher level than a male could naturally get to.
Trib brings up Testosterone to a male's natural high levels. This means, a male will be at their natural best when it comes to testosterone levels.
In females an increase in circulating LH levels, triggered by the rise of estradiol and progesterone levels, from the Trib, initiates follicular maturation and ultimately leads to ovulation.
Bulgarian Tribulus, is as close as your nearest Health Food Store. Every GNC has it across the nation. If you froogle Bulgarian Tribulus.
If you google "Bulgarian Tribulus at Walmart", it brings up this thread, which covered this topic in depth.

So would you guys keep a bred bitch on it to maintain the progesterone levels while she carried puppies?

I dunno about keeping a bitch on the Trib once ovulation has beeb triggered and she has been bred. Seems as though the prenancy itself should maintain the progesterone levels.
I mentioned my friend's success with conception using Tribulus. I advised him to discontinue it following ovulation.
Maintaining the bitch on 1600 mcg of oral folic acid should help her with carrying a normal litter to term and should encourage an easy whelping with good lactation. This particularly important when feeding a bitch raw as such a diet may be deficient in folic acid. I feed raw and keep all my dogs on 800 mcg/day.

- Use during Pregnancy or Lactation
The animal experiments showed that Tribulus possesses a very low toxicity. No evidence of any carcinogenic, embryotoxic and/or teratogenic effect were found. However, the preparation must be discontinued whenever a pregnancy is established.
