A friend of mine has a puppy who has been on Canidae since she got him. He has not gained any weight on that food at all. Puppy was wormed multiple times and has checked out fine by the vet. Has anyone else experienced the same with this food?

Nope. How long has she had the pup? My pup has been on Canidae since 10 weeks. She is now 16 weeks. She has gained 14 lbs in the 6 weeks between then and now. She weighs 34 lbs now.

Just because one dog does well on a certain food, doesn't mean that ALL dogs will.

I have not had that problem either. As RacingQH said, not all food is going to benefit every dog just like people can't eat the same foods. Most Canidae has 12 to 14 percent fat, maybe this particular pup needs something higher?

Tried Canidae did not like the results.  Have had three other people who tried it with bad results.   Will not use it again in my kennel.

Jeni,

What are you feeding your dogs?

Cordon, I haven't had any problems with Canidae and weight loss. I've had pups who needed more food when they were going through a growing period but did fine afterwards.

I'm just mad as can be that they have changed the formula.

I know quite a few people whose dogs have gained weight well on canidae, including one of my bitches who has always been thin. But each dog is different, have they looked into a grain free food, such as Orijen or Evo? High protein for a pup, but it might get the weight on.

Reminds me of a very nice male pup that went through my class a few years back, they fed him the best foods, sometimes as much as 7 or 8 cups a day, had him thouroughly tested by their vet, could find nothing wrong with him but he was rail thin. I cringed just touching him. He wasted away more every week.  I never knew how it turned out, never heard back after they graduated. I hope he got straightened out.

It's not always the food. Have the little guy tested, get 2 or even 3 opinions if you must.

My 10 month old female has been on Canidae all her life, no issues.  Healthy weight, great coat. That's the old formula.  We'll see what the new formula brings.  I completely agree about them changing it.  If is ain't broke......

It may not be a food problem. If the vet has cleared the pup.It more than likely is an enviromental problem. Is the pup caged? Are there other dogs around? Explain further.

How are the dog's stools? Are they well formed or mushy? If there is really no problem and the dog has been screened by the vet extremely well I would suggest a grain free food like Evo along with probiotics. I have seen to many vets "clear" a dog without actually doing an accurate fecal. Whipworms can hide during a fecal and will cause the dog to not gain weight.  Has the dog been wormed for whips as a preventitive measure? What monthly hw prevention is he on? Interceptor does a great job as it also prevents whips while heartguard does not. Metrinidizole, given as a 7 day preventative course sometimes does wonders. I would start by getting a second opinion before blaming the food. How skinny is the dog?
