My puppy is 5 months old, his right ear doesn't stand up, the dog trainer saw him and said its difficult for it to stand up, is  this true?

At 5 months it is quite normal, he is teething still. Don't worry yet.

It's normal, but at 5 months I'd probably tape up the ear just to be sure.  Sometimes it only takes a short time to train the ear and it'll stay up after taping.  If you don't help it, it might not go up on it's own.

thank you guys for your reply,, Momofbeckette: can you tell me how exactly to tape his ear? And for how long?

by oso on 10 July 2008 - 22:07

If you do a search on this messageboard I think you will find a lot of information about different methods of taping ears, and when to do it. The easiest is probaby the specially made foam inserts, but I don't know if they are available where you are. Personally I would wait another month or so. Has his ear ever been up?

oso: actually it did stand up today for a few minutes then went back down

I know this sounds crazy, but my dog had one ear that took forever to come up -- I sang to him, and everytime I did he would tense his ears to listen to the strange sound I was making -- exercise for the ear!  The ear eventually came up and the dog is very thankful to have peace and quiet!

Don't worry, still teething.

To help his stress feed him an ice cube every two hours.

After his teeth come through his ear should be ok.

His chewing will help also his ear.

Cute Pup

He is young and still teething, that has something to do with it.
Also, though, feed him marrow bones, the more they exercise
the mouth muscles it will make for stronger ears, cause chewing
on the bones moves the muscles located near the ears also.

Plus any stress reliever helps pup to relax & grow, marrow bones make my dogs happy

Forget taping the ear,

try using fabric glue, you put a little on the outside part of the ear that is not up,
then press it to the ear that is standing for a minute or so, and the ear that is up
trains it, and hopefully it stays in that position, plus it washes off with water.
You can find it at Wal-Mart in the fabric section

Before

After

This is Theo's brother Lugar, he was the biggest boy in the litter, the lady that got him
told me about fabric glue, I had no clue

Here's my boy at 5 months, and yes I was paranoid that the ear wouldn't stand.

So I did the fabric glue thing (not well).  I used Tear Mender.   He doesn't appear thrilled in this picture.

And here he is now,
