ok, I know you can not get a sable pup out of 2 dogs who ARE NOT SABLE. 1 parent must be sable to produce a sable puppy.
well there's a breeder in my area who just had a litter born. mom is solid black, dad is blk/tan. she had 4 females, 1 sable and 3 solid black. this person is askin g $1000 for each puppy. they tell me I am wrong in regards to the genetics of producing a sable puppy.
So, can someone else please clarify this. they must have had a sable parents to get the 1 sable pup in the litter. looks like their sable stud got to their girl without them knowing. It doesn't matter the grandsires or grandmothrs were sable, if the puppies parents wreen't sable, they can not get a sable puppy.

you are not wrong. In order for there to be any sable gene in any dog, the dog must be a sable dog. Sable is always dominant. Therefore if the dog has a sable gene, it is a sable dog. No black/tan or black dog will carry sable, or it would be a sable dog. Period. This litter would require DNA testing to find out who the sable parent was :). If I as a Breed Warden were inspecting this litter, I would not sign any paperwork for USA/SV registration.

plus it would have to be a sable that carried the black recessive,

No dog that they breed or own would even qualify for a Breed warden to view. I think I know which one thta is now and she is the Darkest Black sable I have ever seen, but who knows?

Because this dog

and this one could never produce a sable. The liniage should be questioned.

I contacted this person, trying to be helpful since there are quite a few people who still think that you can get sables out of non sable parents. I supplied genetics articles that deal with coat color and how it is passed on to the puppies. they still feel that their opinion is right and that the puppy is from the posted sire. I have been told that mom has a lighter undercoat, well that still does not mean she is a sable. I have had black dogs and bi colors with much lighter undercoats and they have never produced a sable puppy.
there is no reasoning or talking to some people, so this issue is dead to me.
