I am wondering if these pups are long coats or just fuzz balls? Or is it too soon to tell? They just turned 4 wks yesterday when the pictures were taken. My ex is going to be keeping one of the males and he would prefer a long coat. Any opinions appreciated. Thanks!

Its little bit too early to tell. Post it once it reaches 6-7 weeks. They look Fuzzy But it will be on a longer side I think (once again hard to say now). What are you looking for is longer hair around ears, legs.

The breeder is in a hurry for me to decide, so thought I would ask. My inclination is to take #1 and not care whether it is a coat or not.

Go for it it looks like it will have a really nice coat. The rule of thumb is that we always have a perfect dog in mind when we look for one, but once we get him we don't care how he will look any more because he is already with us. :) lol Trust me your son will love it no matter how it will look in the end(long/fuzzy coat). Good luck.

To me none of them look like a longcoat.  #1 certainly not.  Second and third pictures look like they'll have a plusher coat, but don't have that longcoat look.  You can get a better sense when they're a little older, but #1 looks pretty safe for a shorter coat.

If you're not planning on breeding, I'd much prefer to pick a puppy based on its temperament and overall personality, than its coat.  You want to make sure it's a good fit with your family and coat is pretty far down on the list.  At 4 weeks the breeder shouldn't be rushing you to decide (unless he/she has a long waitlist of paying prospects).  They still have a lot of growing and developing to do.

If you are not going to breed, pick the dog who touches your heart!  FYI, my last dog was a long coat, and he actually shed less than Radar, who is not a long coat.  I am vacuuming the area around his bed 2-3 times a day, and I am NOT a particularly fastidious housekeeper!

I agree with radarsmom, I had a coat that shed much less than my stock coats.  Coats are special in their own kind of way, I know mine is tucked right here in my heart forever.  I don't think #1 is a coat and the others look a little fuzzier but go with the one that has the personality you're looking for.  I'm sure you'll no matter which you choose.

If he would "prefer" a long coat, and wants a male, I would go with male #2.  He may be, he looks to have more of a chance at being a coat than male #1.

That said, I wouldn't get a pup at all from someone that is forcing me to choose a puppy at 4 weeks.  You have NO way of knowing what the pups personality will be like.  And it very well could be the TOTALLY wrong temperment for your situation.  The breeder should TELL you which puppy is best for you rather than just having you choose one from the whole litter.
