Here's the story:  Visited with breeder for 3 hours and made the decision to purchase puppy.  Asked the breeder if the parents have had their hips checked, she said yes.  Should have asked for it in writing.  Gave breeder $200.00 deposit.  Find out the parents have not had their hips checked.  As far as I know the parents are healthy.  Saw the mom on site.  Talked to breeders assistant  and she said the grandparents had their hips checked.  Should I walk away and lose deposit or get the puppy?

I would ask for my deposit back, based on the fact that the breeder lied to you.

If you have proof of the deposit, and they refuse, report them to the Better Business Bureau and file a claim in small claims court.

While it may cost you more in time/energy, it will help to teach the breeder a lesson.

Also, does the breeder have a contract?

'Course you could post the breeders information on this site, with phone numbers, everyone could call them and ask about the pups and for OFA numbers and when they don't produce them, tell them why we won't buy a puppy from them.

Next  question is the breeder going to get the hips xrayed ?

by margarita on 09 July 2008 - 21:07

The parents of this particular puppy are over 5 years old so if she hasn't xrayed them by now, I don't guess she ever will.  The breeder has no plans to get the puppies hips xrayed.  We did sign a contract.

What did the contract say about hips, if anything?

I would demand the deposit back.  I would NOT buy the pup even if I didn't get deposit back.  Better 200 bucks than the heartbreak/expense of dealing with HD or worse from a possible poor breeding.

We signed a limited contract which means we have 30 days warranty.  There was an option to purchase a full year warranty which include hips and elbows, but it was much more expensive.

 dont take the pup.

get the deposit back if pos

if not thank your lucky stars that you only lost $200

Good hipped parents can still produce bad hips. I have seen quite a few dogs with bad hips that appear fine. But since the breeder lied to they have something to hide also to charge a lot more to guarantee hips is scary. Do not buy the pup it could be worse or more disorders than just bad hips. 200.00 is nothing when you need to go to a vet!

Wow, now you can buy an extended warranty for a GSD.

OMG!!!! You would have to purchase a 1yr guarantee on top of purchase price!!!I am not advertising nor am I selling pups.Just curious..How much were you paying for this pup??How old are the pups? Were you able to "Visit" with the pups?If so..were they in an area that had obstacles..fun stuff! In the contract..Does it say unrefundable deposit?? If not demand your money back. You shouldnt have had to ask the breeder for proof that the hips were done on the sire/dam of the pup.The breeder should have presented this to you...and so much more. Just consider this a lesson learned and be careful next time.
