Hi everyone,
I tried to look up info on the akc site, on changing full akc reg. to limited once the dog has been reg. full.
I had a pup I had reg. full and then decided to part with her when she was about 7 months old.
I norrmally sell pups as pets and companions with limited akc, but if you want to breed your pup
sometime down the line, I will reverse it upon having done a pre-limb or ofa of hips, and of
course the dog having no major faults.
Well, the man that got my full reg. female (She was only going to be a buddy for his older mixed-breed)
he wants to breed her, only to get a pup for himself, and he said he would give away the rest of the litter.
I told him he can't just give pups away, who knows where they may end up.
He also had her hips x-rayed to be sent to ofa, and one doesn't look like it will pass.
So he didn't send them in.
I wanted to pay for a second hip x-ray or evaluation, but all of a sudden he was to busy to
drive to my vets (1/2 hour away, for a second opinion.)
Well, anyway I read the post about limited reg. and this is a shinning example of why I choose limited reg.
I don't up the price to reverse it though, I'm just trying to breed healthy dogs.
I will never sell a pup with full reg. after dealing with this person, BUT, I would still like to know, the answer
to a question, if anyone knows, can full be changed to limited?
I know now that I should have waited before handing over the paperwork....

You can't change from Full to Limited once the dog has Full it has it for life. You can spay the dog.

Maybe you can plead your case to him regarding improving the breed, not deminishing the breed, and perhaps if you are honestly concerned, offer him another puppy from a later litter of your if he will wil this female, maybe not outright free, but for a reduced price. Just a thought.

Besides spaying, the only other option I can think of (which might not sit well with the new owner) is a "co-own" status, where you're name is also on the ownership papers. Any future litters would have to be registered by both owners.

I wouldn't be surprised if the "buyer" didn't register the puppies anyway. Why pay the money to register the litter when you are planning on giving them away? In a case like this, I think the only way to go is to NOT sell the pup/dog until AFTER it is spayed. (I now it is too late in this case.)

Whether or not the AKC has acknowledged it or not, I do not know....but in the past, when I have gotten a purebred dog with papers and speutered them, I have sent the papers off for the owner with, in very big letters across the front of the registration form, written....."THIS DOG HAS BEEN ALTERED AND IS NO LONGER CAPABLE OF REPRODUCING. NO LITTERS SHOULD EVER BE REGISTERED FROM THIS DOG".
I then copy it for my own records, send the papers in(I will mail them), and that way the owner can still compete in obedience, etc with the dogs.
I would hope that this would prevent a "dishonest" owner from going to the pound or the paper and picking up another "purebred" dog and slapping that set of papers on it, in order to "breed" and "make money".
Again, whether or not the AKC would acknowledge that, I don't know....be interesting to find out....
This technique would also allow "shelters" and "rescues" to give "papers" on the dog, so that the dog could compete....

If you were involved in Schutzhund or AKC events you would know that no "papers" are required to compete in trials or events. Papers are only required of dogs being shown in conformation events, whether through AKC or the Schutzhund organizations. There is, in addition, a paper that can be easily gained through the AKC registering any dog, mutt or whatever, without papers that identifies the dog as unregistered. In the United Schutzhund Clubs of America, one need only submit an application to get a scorebook to allow the dog to trial.

Selling a pup in limited status to the new owner does not protect the dog. There are alot of people that just get ahold of GSD's with limited and breed to "Joe" down the road...just for a dollar in sales of pups to just pay a bill errr.Co-owning is a possibility but then again you are liable. If you do breed and sell.It is important to be hands on with the new owners.Even if no money passes hand..The breeder of the pup is fully responsible in my eyes. For those that place/sell rescued dogs with training into appropiate homes.Neuter and take no chances.

Hodie's right, and it's sad that the main registries are doing so little to guard the quality of dogs they register. The AKC allows mixed breed papers so that these dogs can compete in All-Breed performance events (obedience, rally, agility, etc.) and the AKC can get its share of the proceeds. The UScA does ask for a registration number in a scorebook application as does the WDA. Specialty AKC shows (breed and performance) limit the entrants to their particular breed and they can require an AKC number, but the AKC number doesn't get checked until the results get sent in to the parent club and the AKC. That's why there are "Reserve" winners and why results sometimes get changed after the show. Could it be done better? Sure, but time is money and almost all the people involved with breed or performance events are volunteers. Nobody in my club is on salary from the club.

Thanks for sharing Sam1427.My Gsd's are AKC registered which is meaningless to them.I have been criticized by past friends why I don't compete with my dogs on any layer..hmmm go to an AKC club event in Mobile or Pensacola.I went and watched and there are too many politics/clicks. Both in show..utility so called work..obedience etc etc.I contacted the president of the GSDCA in which regional gave me the local contact.I was devastated when I heard this persons name..She is all show and sells numerous litters per year.I contacted the Lower Al Sar group to no avail. Its good that you volunteer.
