Good Morning Fellow Members  especially in the UK

If anyone really wants to get to the bottom of  problems  which have been more established in the breed ,two of which I can add  to your list Linda,

Anal Furunculosis and Auto Immune .

Why not contribute to the DNA screening being done by Dr Cathryn Mellersh at the AHT?

The GSD Information Group has sent already 200 odd swabs out to kennels which have health queries

They do want Healthy animals as well for they have also to have controls, so a good reading can be conpared with an animal with a problem.

Only at present open to UK kennels.

Please feel free to contact me  01277 220933. or my email address. as in B/C Handbook.

Dorothy.

Just  an update for members

So far we have sent  to 342 persons who have show  interested in this research apply for swabs.

The 4 Professors  involved  are  each researching a different problem   now seen in the GSD.

I have also two Vets who have this morning agreed to participate encouraging  owners with GSDs with problems to participate.

So things are at last looking up.

Thank-you to those who are forward thinking enough  to have contributed from this site.

Superdog.

Are they researching DNA samples to assist in research to find the DNA markers for these diseases, which then may result in a DNA test for each disease? If so I am lead to understand that this can take years, and then some two years for patenting and scientific publishing.

Superdog, I PM'd you asking for details on these DNA tests and received on response. Is there interest in dogs in the US or only the UK? If US dogs are wanted, I will be happy to particpate with Blitz, but I need more information.

Good Afternoon

To Videx and Bltzen apologies have not been to the site for some time since I posted.

Videx you are quite correct  yes this is step into trying to find the markers and  then  hopefully set ting up relavent tests to find cariers.

This has European veterinary backing and  the amount of money  invested is vast.

It is a step forward but it is better to  do something rather than nothing,  It could be a great step forward, let us hope so.

At present Blitzen this is just for UK dogs, but thank-you for your interest and I will keep you posted if there is any development towards extending the  research. It is much appreciated that you have both  read  details and want to know more.
