Has anyone had someone train their dog for a FH or FH2? What is the going rate for these titles?

 Blackdog,

The answer to your question depends in large measure on the dog and what training and quality of training it has had to date. Why don't you clarify that? Bottom line, it is a lot of work to train for advanced tracking titles, or for that matter, just to train a dog from scratch to SchH 1.

Trainers charge anywhere from $600-over $1000 a month, and some people do a package deal for a certain amount of money.  In Germany, you'd have a better chance of getting a good deal with a knowledgable trainer.  Be sure you get references from people whose dogs these trainers have actually titled.  You don't want to use a trainer who might have problems teaching even their own dogs to track properly.

Training to track in my opinion, if you have a good dog, is not that hard, just time consuming (oh boy, some people are going to be throwing eggs at me for that one! :-)  Go to a good tracking seminar, and then get busy.  Save yourself money and grief, many trainers are crooked, just like dog brokers, and some are not careful with your dog, either.  It's fun and peaceful to track in the early morning with your dog, who you know is safe and happy with YOU.  Veronica

My male live with his trainer part time for 3 years and competed nationally, he had all of his titles and FH tilte. Last fall he injured himself  pretty badly at a regional. He has a back injury that will possibly require surgery in the future. He's doing very well and he is retired. This spring his trainer  tracked him 3 times a week for several months to get him ready for his FH2, which he scored a 96 points! I always paid a monthly training fee, but this time was different and was trying to figure out what would be fair for everyone.

 Blackdog,

Congratulations on the successes of your dog, and I am sorry to hear of his injury. Maybe if you do nothing more with him, and perhaps find a way to swim him, you can avoid surgery. In any case, I think you can work out a reasonable price for the training and trial your trainer did with the dog. Such things should be decided in advance. That way, there is no problem when the time comes. And the score was excellent!!! So your trainer did a good job it seems.

Thank you hodie.

I am very proud of my blackdog, Atze. It is a shame that he had to retire. He has some nice up and coming females that will be competing next year, so they will hopefully achieve what he didn't get to finish. You are absolutely right that we should have discussed this first.

Atze is doing acupuncture, he loves it. He is swimming with my husband and son as I type!

It is super that you already have a great trainer, Blackdog, and that you are also appreciative.  Good luck with his continued sucess.
