I hate it when someone contacts you about a dog or upcoming litter or puppy you have and tries to make a deal for it. I mean WHO'S dog is it?!? I am not talking about haggling, I am talking about straight out - here's what I will do and offer you for your dog. Is this normal in the dog industry??

Someone just contacted me about a puppy and wants to do a thing where they train and title the female puppy but instead of doing the normal like we co-own the dog where we split the litters or like I have seen some kennels do and do a foster on the dog and the kennel gets all the puppies but 1 puppy from the last litter is the foster famiies but the kennel incurs all breeding expenses. This person only wants to give me one puppy back from the first litter. So they would get a free puppy and then 2 years down the road I might get one puppy back without any say about the bitch or the potential stud? I think not.

LOL!  Maybe with a breeding female I'd make such a deal but not a puppy.  Even with a breeding female, I would expect more than one pup back if they are paying no money up front for the dog.  Free puppy=possible pup down the road.  Not a chance.

There are more and more kennels that are doing foster homes and creative offerings

As the old saying goes it nevers hurts to "ASK".

but I think they went about it the wrong way from how you stated it.

I had someone email me interested in one of my Lex X Troja puppies(both Lex and Troja are SchH3).  I have these puppies priced at $800 and they wanted to know if I would take less!  Less?!?  These are already priced cheap!  I said NO as I am doing some training on them on a regular basis!

It's becoming a buyers market so some are getting more creative in their "offers".  Even the very best working lines are getting hard to place for a realistic amount.   That's a huge part of why I bred one litter and decided I was done.    Maybe a few years down the road I will reconsider, but for now no more puppies here.

And you know what's crap?  You see byb types advertising with non-OFA'd or titled parents that don't care where their pups go still getting the $1000 - $1500.   Of course those are the pups that end up in shelters later.....  Or become byb producers themselves.

"I hate it when"...the title of a post gives no information about what the thread is about.  I like a concise descriptive title so I know what I am opening or if I prefer, not opening.

Well they must be crazy.

If you have set price for dog. Then, I wouldn't even respond to anyone who doesn't have the money.

There are so many con artist out there, who want something for nothing.

I hate that too!!!!

I always go by my first vibe on the phone.  A friend of mine says, sell the appointment first.  I will never negotiate over the phone.  It is like buying a car without looking at it first.  It is rude too.  I also tried raising the price and saying negotiotiable to approved homes.  I has worked for me with two litters.  I never want to devalue them.

Firelight,

Don't worry and do it.  You are going to end up screwing them anyway like you screwed me out of $1,500.

So why not do it?

Well, there will always be people who try to bargain your dogs/puppy sales. That's why we have a policy - "Bargaining over the price of a dog or puppy is not tolerated.  We offer superior German Shepherd Dogs that we have priced fairly, and we find haggling completely unacceptable. Our dogs are not just dogs to us; they are our family.  It is offensive to us when someone chooses to negotiate the price of our “children”!  We are not commercial breeders, and we do not make a living breeding dogs.  Puppy sales only cover a small fraction of the costs of running a quality breeding program. The purchase price of a puppy or dog is only a small part of the cost of ownership. The cost of vet bills, food, crates, and other dog supplies must be taken into account when purchasing a dog.  If the purchase price is an issue for a prospective client, our concern is that these important and necessary expenses will be difficult to cover, resulting in inadequate care of the dog throughout its life time.  In this case we will automatically decline the sale.  Remember, too, that you get what you pay for!" Listed right on our website. Once, someone tries to haggle we permanently block them from future eMails. Don't get me wrong we do donate at least 5-7 dogs a year to police departments or legitimate working homes. We also do a lot of service dogs, where the families are not capable of large purchase we are then willing to work with those clients, you as a seller must be as careful with your research of potential clients.   This is an honest response in reference to the 'Foster Program' - Yes, we offer this program however, you MUST BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL. We never had a problem until recently when a client who is on our foster program claiming she has no obligations to us. She is in severe breech on contract. (Dog overweight, dog not being cared for properly (was hospitalized for a list of things which were as severe as septic programs) never fufilled her obligations as the foster program outlines, she then proceeded to open a doggie daycare/boarding facility where our dog lives full time. This women is now demanding that all dog breedings/whelping take place in a doggie daycare/boarding facility where it is obvious that the conditions are less then ideal. To make the situation better she has gained the friendship of a lovely scam artist DH who is feeding her lines of BS and egging her on!  Yes, we are in superior court fighting this issue as I type this. However, as a breeder (most of you MUST understand this) we are not loaded with money, the women we are fighting is a retired lady who has multiple incomes so throwing $10,000 + out on lawsuits/lawyers is not problem.  My advice - DO YOUR HOMEWORK, too many out in the world are fake, opportunist, waiting for their next meal.  If anyone would like additional details to this story feel free to eMail me at vonHaydenSheps@gmail.com     www.vonHaydenGermanShepherds.com
