I was just blessed to have a man from Kuwait spend last month here learning about GSD training, health, conformation and other issues. He is Muslim. Obviously he had no such objection and in his country many people now have dogs. So not all Muslims share this view, any more than they all hate Western nations and people. It is sad that the media picks up on something like this and then makes a mountain out of a molehill. I would bet that there are many people in the area involved who also feel the same way, regardless of their faith.

Yeah Hodie I couldn't agree more. Too many times people make assumptions about the WHOLE group, but a lot of times it is just certain individuals who think like that.

Agree I been seing more and more incidents where media twist the truth and makes it in somethng that is really not.

The people who live opposite me are Muslim and they beg me to get my dogs out for a fuss .

Agree. A friend of mine (dog trainer) was sent to Bangladesh (sp) to a small village to work with the natives on teaching the dogs their to help indicate and remove tigers from the village. She said it was like a step back in time and the village residents were Muslim. She was not sure how she would be recieved but she said she was met with a warm reception. The village was very, very clean and well kept. The dogs were just strays that did not really belong to anyone and more of a nuisance, just tossed occasional scraps and most extremely timid. She said it was incredible how quickly they learned to work with, train the dogs and see their worth. I think in like 10 days both villagers and dogs were doing basic obedience. I wish I had saved the newspaper article....

Ninja181,
No, it will not end. the British Isles are overrun with fundamentalist wack jobs and the unclean dog issue is right out of the Koran. Obviously, more enlightened peoples of all faiths make their own judgements or tolerate others who do not believe that dogs are unclean.
This type of bullying crap will not go away just if we make believe and do what they insist on. It is not the media that created this.
If someone believes dogs are unclean, then don't get a dog.
Here is my message to these bullies: Don't impose and enforce your narrow views on the rest of us. Dogs are integral parts of police departments in the civilized world. If someone doesn't like that no problem. Stick with the many 7th century countries available who will welcome you with open arms and not offend your tender sensibilities with puppy pictures.
My ancestors fled Syria for their lives. I really don't want to be bullied here.

Firstly I suspect this is media hype. The number of complaints was probably miniscule.
Secondly, I think this is a case of the vocal minority tarnishing the majority. In my experience 99% of the Muslims in Britain won't see what the fuss is all about . Some of them even own dogs and love them to bits.

Pharaoh,
There are extremists in every country, of every faith, including the United States. Yes, enlightened and civilized people tolerate others who don't believe as they do. There are bullies everywhere as well. The media picks up on them rather than those like my friend who was here from Kuwait. There are millions of people of various faiths around the globe who have little or no experience with dogs but are willing to learn about them and there are also millions who do not like dogs, and some who would eat them.
In my friends own country there are extremists. Fortunately, there is a strong governmental and societal system that to date keeps the extremists in check. One cannot be bullied if one speaks up. Unfortunately, all too often in Britain and elsewhere those who are not extremists are quiet about important issues, just like here. When the chips are down, see how many people will stand up to speak out about a wrong.....not many, including here in the U.S.
