I have been researching Pet Insurance, I have found 2 companies, 1 is thru the AKC and the other is thru 24 PetWatch. Does anyone have experience with either? I like the 24 petwatch coverage because it does cover dysplasia, hip and elbow, the AKC excludes all geneticically inheritated illnesses or diseases. I have never looked for insurance before much less pet insurance so any tips or info would be appreciated.

I wouldnt waste my money...In 29 years I havent used a vet and the cost of their insurance out spends what I ever have ever needed to pay any vet. Buy healthy pups from Healthy breedings and no insurance needed..They do the same thing the human companies do,,find any reason not to pay ..

I have VPI and it has paid for itself.   It does not cover genetic conditions but I have working dogs and have had some trips to the VET ER and Doggie dentist.  One broken canine tooth covered 4 years worth of premiums for my one dog.

My concern is more about covering injurites, not the day to day health.

Rose, U of all people should understand my desire for insurance! LOL Just call me Calamity Jane. If it is going to happen it will happen to me. I am very careful of Mischa, but accidents happen and in the event that she turns out dysplastic I want to be able to have her hips fixed. Not saying that there is a good chance of that..... better safe than sorry. These days vets charge as much if not more than doctors.

I just paid the insurance for my daughters dog. With inflation going up daily, I figure by the time we have to get a shot at the end of the year, it will pay for itself.

If the premiums are not so high as to eat up what you would pay for a vet visit , take it out...I never have need for it...accidents can happen,,,but you have to cover the dog from a puppy for hip dysplasis , i believe...They call that a condition already started in the dog...ask around the vets and see what  success they have with filing the claims and how many of them take insurances successfully..You can file a claim on any of the pet insurances,,but do they pay them....find people who have had claims paid and what for....

My daughter has it on hers she got it thru the AKC. It has paid for the shots, 1 teeth cleaning per year, she was sick and on fluids for a short time, they covered that also. I am not sure if deductable or how much. I have a refund check here on my desk for about $120.00. In talking with Daughter, she has stated she has had no problem getting the funds from them. Also, I do not kknow who is offering, but there is an insurance company out there that just begin offing  free (pet insurance)  with every new homeowners poiicy. I saw it on a commerical. You might google and try and find it. It might save you the extra insurance funds.

I saw a commercial for  Progressive Auto Insurance where they are now offering an endorsement  which provides up to $500. in coverage for pet veterinary bills incurred due to an accident, but I would be sure to read the fine print  to see exactly what's covered before I took it out!
