Here are some things to consider when looking at Lamb/Rice or other "novel" protien foods...

1)  If your dog doesn't need it, don't feed it.  Allergies can be developed, not necessarily born with them, hence, if you feed it off the bat, then you run the risk of "contaminating" that protien source some day when you really need it.

2)  Make sure you read the ingredients.  Often time "Lamb and Rice" varieties have been preserved with Chicken fat, etc...

That being said:

Canidae: All Natural Ingredients
Lamb meal, brown rice, cracked pearled barley, rice bran, peas, millet, canola oil, lamb, tomato pomace, natural flavor, flaxseed meal, potassium chloride, choline chloride, sun cured alfalfa meal, inulin (from chicory root), lecithin, sage extract, cranberries, beta carotene, rosemary extract, sunflower oil, yucca schidigera extract, dried enterococcus faecium, dried lactobacillus acidophilus fermentation product, dried aspergillus oryzae fermentation extract, dried bacillus subtilis fermentation extract, saccharomyces cerevisiae fermentation solubles, vitamin E supplement, iron proteinate, zinc proteinate, copper proteinate, ferrous sulfate, zinc sulfate, copper sulfate, potassium iodide, thiamine mononitrate, manganese proteinate, manganous oxide, ascorbic acid, vitamin A supplement, biotin, calcium pantothenate, manganese sulfate, sodium selenite, pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), vitamin B12 supplement, riboflavin, vitamin D supplement, folic acid, cobalt proteinate, organic selenium, papaya, pineapple.

California Natural: ngredients:

After looking for about 30 minutes, these were the only 2 true lamb/rice formulas that I could find.

If you have to have an absolute formula, you might want to consider going to grain free.  Just a thought.

I understand where you are going and agree with it [about keeping foods with novel proteins in reserve]

-- did want to mention though that my chicken allergic dog never had problems with chicken fat - I gather since it is the protein that induces the allergies. We knew he was allergic to chicken through an elimination diet.

Interesting, I fed lamb and rice to my girl until she turned eight and now have her on Natural Balance Senior with C&G. Will have to re-think on my next pup which food to pick..
