Arrakis

I am desparately looking for a true "Lamb and Rice" based food. I have a dog that's allergic to poultry and barley. I wrote these people along with other companies asking them why they call their "lamb and rice" that name when the first ingredient after the lamb was barley. Why don't they call it "Lamb and Barley" instead of rice. False information.

This is the response I got to this question AND they offered me a coupon for Kibbles 'n Bits dog food as it doesn't contain barley. Such crap! So much for this product being good anymore as it's owned by Del Monte the "green" bean people.

Dear Arrakis,

Thank you for your e-mail about Nature's Recipe Canine Dry Food. We're glad you took the time to contact us and appreciate the opportunity to respond.

You questioned the presence of barley in one of our Nature's Recipe Lamb and Rice varieties that don't list barley as part of the name on the label. You may be surprised to learn that a pet food label must meet many very explicit legal requirements. AAFCO (Association of American Feed Control Officials) is the state regulatory agency that determines the guidelines that pet food manufacturers use to name a flavor or variety. The AAFCO regulation states that the flavor description must have a sufficient amount of those ingredients to impart their characteristics to the product.  However, the other ingredients can be anything that would help ensure the product is nutritionally complete and balanced. Barley is a highly-digestible and normally very well-tolerated carbohydrate source, present in Nature's Recipe products in carefully balanced amounts to support pets' metabolic energy demands.

Nevertheless, we regret your disappointment. We appreciate your feedback and will bring your comments to the attention of our Management.

Thanks again for your e-mail. In an effort to help you find a product that meets your dog's dietary needs, I'm sending you some complimentary coupons in the mail for Kibbles 'n Bits Dry Dog Food. The vast majority of our Kibbles 'n Bits recipes do not contain barley. Please don't hesitate to contact me if I can be of any further assistance.

I don't know why you have an issue with the ingredients of Kibbles and Bits...    check out all the yummy ingredients!  AND there is food coloring to make it look so pretty and appealing for the owner!  And your dog shouldn't have a problem eating it - it has corn syrup to make it tasty !!

YIKES!!!!!

Ingredients  (Kibble and Bits...)

corn, soybean meal, beef and bone meal, ground wheat flour, animal fat (bha used as preservative), corn syrup, wheat middlings, water sufficient for processing, animal digest (source of chicken flavor), propylene glycol, salt, hydrochloric acid, potassium chloride, caramel color, sorbic acid (used as a preservative), sodium carbonate, minerals (ferrous sulfate, zinc oxide, manganous oxide, copper sulfate, calcium iodate, sodium selenite), choline chloride, vitamins (vitamin E supplement, vitamin A supplement, niacin supplement, D-calcium pantothenate, riboflavin supplement, pyridoxine hydrochloride, thiamine mononitrate, vitamin D3 supplement, folic acid, biotin, vitamin B12 supplement), calcium sulfate, titanium dioxide, yellow 5, yellow 6, red 40, BHA (used as a preservative), dl methionine

I can personally recommend Taste of the Wild (if you search the message board you will find a couple threads regarding it)  They have a couple poultry free choices.

There are a couple other's out there that sound great - just depends on your food budget.   Pretty much anything offered at the grocery stores and the Corporate Pet stores (Petsmart, Petco)  are going to offer crap.  Hefty advertising and fancy wording is what keeps the crap dog food industry alive...  Good luck with your search.

Animules

The only problem with the food you posted:  Fish meal and chicken fat.  Those ingredients to a dog who is truly allergic could cause problems....

Not a "true" lamb and rice.

You might want to check out Blue Buffalo Dog Food (www.bluebuff.com)  Another good dog food if Natual Balance (www.naturalbalanceinc.com) .  I know they have allergy formulas.  A natural diet you make yourself might also be a good choice; especially if you're just cooking for one dog.

Arrakis,

"AAFCO (Association of American Feed Control Officials) is the state regulatory agency that determines the guidelines that pet food manufacturers use to name a flavor or variety."

What a load of crap! I can not believe that they wrote that sentence. The AAFCO is an organization that was created by and is run by officials from Purina, Hill's Science Diet, Iams and few others. It does have state and federal representatives, but, it in no way is a government agency. They are so full of sh!t it isn't funny.

If you want to know what "Complete and Balanced" means please refer to this web site:

www.dogfoodproject.com

go to Label Info 101 (this is some of the best and most important info a pet owner can read)

Please take your time and look over this whole web site. You will become a pseudo-expert on pet nutrition.
