hi,

I want a goood dog food for my dog who has been having grainy dog food for most of his life. I came across the dog foods mentioned above in a local pet store. The only problem is that orijen and innova have a very high protien content(44% and 42%). I want to know which dog food is better? Im not talking about my gsd i also have a six year old lab.

I have a few friends that feed canidea and their dogs look very good. another high quality food I would recommend that is not so high in protein is Fromm Gold.  I am very happy with the product   I feed  senior , adult and puppy

I should however add that my dogs do get raw meat  such as chicken and  beef  sometimes goat  ,green tripe and goat stomach, beef  lung , meaty bones   I have stopped feeding raw meat for a while  due to distrubotor problem and now  fortunate  to get my hands on green tripe and such and it sure makes a difference in the dogs .  I buy the chicken backs from the local butcher

Oh what a coincidence mirasmom!  But if u go to www.dogfoodanalysis.com you will find that orijen and innova have a higher rating. Im not really sure of the protien content, its very high and it could cause an upset tummy...oh and before i forget my lab also has allergies, so i think his allergies will become better after i feed him better dog food.

I have been feeding Orijen Adult & puppy Large breed for the last 1,5 year after having tried Hills, Purina, Nutro, Techni-Cal, Eukanuba  with ecxellent results comparable to all of the above.

I would not recommend it for large breed puppies as they seem to grow up too fast however I would definately recommend it for adults.

Please note that shortly the company producing Orijen (which is also producing ACANA) will be upgrading the ACANA line deducting almost all seeds from its recipes (ecxept rice) and they will also introduce 4 completely new types with no seeds at all following the Orijen concept which is boosting high in demand. The protein level will be lower than that of Orijen for those that are skeptical about using high protein diets (29 %- 35%).

Moreover, up to date, Orijen is the only one without any recalls (to my knowledge).

I feel the protein of 42 and 44  are way to high for a dog that is not  on the field everyday and will evidentually show up with a liver problem

Look for the one Pia suggest or the  Taste of the Wild

I have been feeding Orijen Adult for quite a while to my male, great food!!!
Getting a new pup that is going to be on Canidae All Life Stages (good food).
Don't want to have two different foods, so started to switch over to
the All Life Stages for the Adult. Well its not going so good, he started to
turn his nose up at 50% mix. Now at 100% All Life Stages & having to have to
add treats to food. Funny I never had a problem with Mid grade food before with him.

Healthwise is an excellent food. It has a lower protein content then the EVO and Orijen, and is made by the manufacturer of the EVO and Innova foods. It is a very reasonably priced food and extremely high quailty. Here is the ingredient list.

Chicken Meal, Oatmeal, Brown Rice, Chicken Fat, Flaxseed MEal, Natural Flavors, Herring Oil, Avocado Oil, Garlic Powder, Dried Kelp, Potassium Chloride, Choline Chloride, Calcium Carbonate, Vitamins, Minerals

For a more detailed description of ingredients go to the manufacturers website www.naturapet.com

Hello all,

I love these posts because I think that we all learn a lot.

To give you a little background, I train and compete in Schutzhund with my dogs. I am also the co-founder of a cat and dog rescue. (I know its rare, but, those last two sentences can go together.) Because of this I usually have 6-8 dogs in my home. Various GSD's, an AmStaff, mixes, and a dog with EPI.

I have tried all of the above and have used Canidae quite extensively. I truly believe that it is one of, if not, the best food for the money out there.  As a note, this company has been getting a lot bigger over the past few years and they have recently changed their formulas a bit. I believe it is the addition of barley. Another grain. Does this make it bad, not necessarily, but, I am not a big fan of a lot of grain in cat and dog food.

I believe that the Orijen is probably the best made food out there, but, it is expensive and it does not work with all dogs. I have some that did great on it and others that had some runny stools.

Innova Evo is also a good food, but, I also had a few more dogs with the runny stool after awhile. I do highly recommend using the various Evo canned foods as a supplement to dry.

My personal opinion on the two above is that some dogs will not tolerate the high protein levels in these foods and that is why they are having looser stools than the others. The other thing that you will see with these foods is an extremely high fat content. This is often overlooked because people are so stuck on the protein level. This will also cause loose stool with dogs that have EPI or may not have the strongest pancreatic function. This is a tough one for EPI dog owners because you need high protein levels and low fat levels. Fat is not good for EPI dogs. It is also important to note that I was given some info from a seminar on dog foods that made it very clear that you must make sure that your dogs or cats are getting a lot of water when they are on these high protein foods in order to help the liver and kidneys process that amount of protein in a dry form. Cats and dogs can easily process high protein levels when the food is in its whole form (meaning all of the moisture content intact).

I most recently have been using Taste of the Wild. (see Yellowrose we can agree on some things). The nice part about this food is that it is grain free (yea), but, the protein (and fat) levels are not as high as the others. They have venison and bison formula and bird (chicken, turkey, duck) formula that are about 32% protein levels and a salmon formula that is 25-26% protein. Much more tolerable for most dogs.

I was a little skeptical of Taste of the Wild at first, but, after using it I can tell you that none of my dogs have loose stools and that their poop is the smallest I have ever seen with dogs that are all approximately 65-75lbs. It is the size of poop that you would typically see with 20lb dogs.

Keep giving those raw bones also. Keeps the jaw muscles strong and the teeth pearly white.

I hope this helps. It is not scientific in any way. It is solely the observations of someone who tries very hard to stay on top of this. Good Luck!

I have tried all of the above & still love the Orijen best, dogs do woderfully on it, their labs always come back wnl, eyes bright, coats so shiney they look misted, & just bursting with energy! I mix the Orijen puppy food with other puppy food to lower the protien content for my pups, & of course they all get raw meaty bones & raw boneless chicken as well. I never could get used to feeding poultry bones, makes me too nervous. And they love the Orijen, as well; no one turns their nose up at Orijen! Just wish it was easier to find! jh
