GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Authorities say a Greenville County deputy accidentally shot and killed a police dog pursuing a man suspected of shooting a store clerk.

A police report says the police dog, Wes, had been released to pursue 26-year-old Antwaun Demarcus Whitmire, but began biting a deputy's leg Monday morning.

The report says Deputy Chris McAlmont did not realize it was a police dog and fired because he "feared for his safety." McAlmont was treated and released from Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Lt. Shea Smith says the shooting followed an argument between Whitmire and his girlfriend outside a Greenville convenience store early Monday. Whitmire fired shots after the woman ran in the store and employees locked the man out.

Store clerk Susan Lambert was shot at least once and was treated and released from the hospital.

sad tales like this just TEE me off.  the police dog wears a badge or big collar ID to say I AM A POLICE DOG.  all police that work with the handlers should know you do not get in the way of the dog when they are sent and the handler needs to have control ( trust) that their dog has seen the person that they are set at.   It is so easy to think the dog sees what you are seeing.  This is not always the case, usually everyone is running around.  The officer that was bite should have let the handler out his dog period not shoot it.  He was being an AH!!!!!!

My ex is a police officer and there was one K9 that when he got out of the car, everyone dived back into their car. They knew that he would just as soon bite them.

A patrol K9 should know "OFF"! But there are some lines that just don't have this.Perhaps this was due to poor training of the dog by an incompitent(sp)trainer and the officer wasnt trained in detail as well.So many PD if they have a budget purchase an already made dog.One of my pups went to a retired K-9 officer of many years. He named her after his favorite K-9 "Officer".To make a long story short he is having a difficult time with her because each K-9 that went under his hands came to him at two yrs old.

IMO- Piss poor training, lack of real life training (senario training). I am L.E and we live and die by the saying " train as you work, work as you train"

Interesting an experiencd LE officer would rush to judgment when they do not know the circumstances of the deployment. Especially when the information is provided by the media.

I would agree there were holes in the training. My guess is the handler deployed the dog with another officer in foot persuit between the suspect and the handler. You can train this scenario and teach the dog to go after the lead runner. Call off is important as well.

However, I do not know the details of the deployment there for I cannot judge.
